When I was shopping for some food I noticed a wonderful assortion of tropical fruit there on the Helsinki's most famous department store Stockmann. I bought only the most photogenic ones, 10 "species" in all (a few of each) and in the evening when the day was over (actually in the morning, as the session ended 4 am) I started taking some photos of the lot.
I had only one movable halogen spotlight (I think from IKEA) available and I found out a nice way to get rid of the most harsh highlights (most fruit have a very shiny surface): I had the exposure at ca. 2 sec. and while the camera was taking the shot I moved the light or moved a hand covering the light partially. You can make wonders with just one simple light like this.
Later I noticed that the TV blue (TV was on the same table) was reflected in highlights and gave a nasty blueish tint, but RAW saved the colors as I picked a blue highlight and all colors were very accurate again (I checked the tints against the original fruits). I took a few JPG's too and they were defaulted to "daytime" white balance which oversaturated the red and orange. So, my advice still stays: "shoot in RAW".
You may ask why didn't I just shut down the tv when shooting, but hey, it was early morning, I drank some red wine, I was too tired to think and the DVD running there was Saving Private Ryan which is quite a captivating film. Anyway the lesson is that when you shoot in low light, all light sources count even if they don't seem important on the spot.
Again I had problems with camera overheating and causing hot pixels even with noise reduction, but luckily the problems were easily corrected in PS (clone tool). I let the camera chill out from time to time, and also kept some frozen buns (!) over the backside of G1 but it helped only for a while. Maybe I'll take the camera and demo prints to Canon one day and replace it to a better specimen - maybe my G1 is overly sensitive to its own heat.
In any case I got some nice shots out of about 100 I took that night, and one or two will surely go into main gallery. I just wish I had a macro lens - that's what I'm going to get next week I'm sure.
