The Nikkor 300mm f4.5 AI-S or the f4 ED do quite well on either crop or full size sensors.

The Nikkor 50-300mm f4.5 needs to be stopped down to perform well on digital....but I wouldn't think of selling this lens....sweet handling...

Why feel ashamed? Thats great gear you got there! Go out, shoot, be proud, and don't get self conscious when the guy with the 1D4 and 300 f2.8 Is walks up. It is all about what you can do with your gear.

You should be more then happy with your gear!

When I first started shooting regularly 40 years ago,my first couple thousand pics or so,was with just 50,135 and a 200mm lens for a couple of years.

Later when I added a used 28mm and a 55mm macro, I thought that was all I would ever need, and it probably would have been....and then in the mid 70's zoom lens really improved,so I bought a few...then got caught up in collecting lenses and bodies.
