Thanks for your nice comment! It was my first test shot, and flash-less, to see what this f/1.2 magic they speak of was all about! I found out on my first try! The Sigma is a great buy and produces a great bang for the buck! Keep on shooting and post your results... if I have anything against the Siggy, is that it is for crop cameras only!

Here's a tip for the missus... sell a few junk lying around and comment to your lady something like "Oh honey... I sold off a few junk things that were lying around collecting dust... hope you are okay with it..." and of course she will be okay with it especially if it is your junk... then when you buy new things... she will remember that you do get rid of old stuff so you're technically allowed to buy new stuff! At least that is how my missus reacts and allows me to get new toys... and especially fotog stuff... "look honey, what do you think about this portrait I made of you for our living room?" She'll say... "Wow! I'm surely popping out of that image!" and you say "I made it with my new lens that I bought with the money I got from selling my junk..." (end it right there... because obviously you put in some more!)

Beautiful shot Ellery!
And hopefully you can see that my tongue-in-cheek title was to see who would attack and who would demo the "opposition".
Of course, what I really want to say is that Canon have finally, IMHO, produced a crop camera which nobody should slate. I'm amazed, after just 3 or 4 hours having it in my grubby paws, how well put together it feels.
And the Siggy, for only ¥48,000 (about $500) does a fine job too.

Gimme a week or two to get used to my 7D, and I think that if I set up my old pocket watch from 1903, use off camera flash, and make sure Missus Skygod isn't around (as my, err, latest photo-toys are, as yet, unknown to her!!!!), I think I could produce a very good competitor to your shot...and for a pretty small fraction of the prices of a 1Ds2 and 85L.

So, as we're (mostly) Canon users in POTN, it makes me feel all warm 'n' fuzzy knowing that for almost any budget, we can all get our hands on excellent gear!
:D

i like the bamboo and house shots.

it's good your enjoying the combo skygod.

i borrowed a friend's 7D for the weekend just to test the speedlite commander and instantly felling in love with it. I just can't let go of my 40D as a backup to my 5D at the moment. but soon...

.....is what someone would say if:
a) They can't tell a good camera/lens from their arse.
b) Sadly, thay picked up a "bad" body or lens.
c) They need to have more frequent trips to their shrink!
;)
WOW, what a camera and what a lens!

I picked up my shiny new 7D yesterday afternoon, and after much pondering on my 200L (semi-bought from a matey) I decided against keeping it and instead picked up a Siggy 30 f/1.4.

Here are my first shots. And a couple of posts down is a bonus shot with my 100-400 using the 7D's wonderful, easy-to-use, and logical AF system.

Things will improve a lot, but with less than 24hrs use on its little internal clock, I think I can judge already that Canon have cracked it, as far as making an exceptional camera for people who love to shoot anything and everything, but don't want to lug a 1-series around.

Hi!
I can see that you really happy with your combo, thats what its all about! Congratts :D
These two shots loos like they are missfocused tho, looked at exif and saw that they are shot wide open. Im really interested in this lens as well on my 7D!
Give microadjustments a shot and see if that makes em pop for real.

Anyways, if your happy then its good, but you never know... might be worth it

By the way. Liked that last shot of the house.

elisha - ur shots look spot on!

skygod - i've had the siggy for about 5 months now. started on the 40d and love it on my 7d for the last 2 months. i always thought that it images it took were a little soft wide open. last night however i did some micro adjustment tests. seems like my copy needed a -10 adjustment.

hopefully my photos are now even sharper! i'll have to test it out for a little while, but i can let u guys know if i see a difference.

I have the same combo and love it. I actually had the Canon 50mm 1.4 , but that wasn't quite wide enough for me. I find the Sigma 30mm 1.4 perfect with a cropped body!

1.4 does take some getting used to. I typically snap several shots each time I'm shooing something at 1.4 (re-focusing each time) to make sure I nail one.

They do seem a bit soft here as well. But then again as stated it's a crop body wide open. All in all not terrible.

i love the combo...and Love the old house pic too...

Thanks for the comments. As many have advised, I will micro-adjust the Siggy in the next few days and shoot again. But yeah, the bokeh is damn fine, IMO!

You're welcome!

Thanks for the tip, but I've merely "brought forward" the purchase date a little....Missus Skygod knew I was aiming to get a new body+lens in June or July anyway.:D

Thanks. All the first shots were deliberately to see if I'd made a mistake.
And, I think not! :D
Of course, getting as comfortable with a brand new body and lens takes time. But I'm really impressed so far.
My next dream body will be a 5D3 or, if Canon get their act together, a 3D!

Great picks Elisha! I'd been pondering/playing with a 200L, but kept thinking I really wanted something in between my EF-S10-22 and 50f/1.4.
The Siggy is a great solution!

Thanks for the info'. I'm going to test all my lenses soon as possible, as micro-adjustment was a major reason to get the 7D. Don't have it with my trusty 30D.

Hey there supernova. For me, having the 30mm feels just right as a stop-gap between the UWA and 50mm "standard" lens. For standard perspective, I think we all "need" a 50mm in our bag, so I can't see myself walking away from my trusty 50f/1.4, but yeah, the Siggy gives a really usable field of view!

The sharpness is there, I just think it's a case of micro-adjusting.....more on that later!
Cheers all who commented.

I feel the same about my 7d+sigz combination. I just got mine as well a few hours ago and I am adoring it. Don't forget to test it to see if it's not quite on focus, if you have to send it into sigma you can, or 7D's do have the micro lens adjust feature.

And here's some back at you - I see you have the Kenko extension tubes...I highly recommend you get a Canon EF100mm macro (non-L/IS) as it's a steal and will allow you to take incredible macro shots - like the one below - if you couple it with a snoot (mine is home-made!).

I can't wait to try out shots like this but with the 7D....the extra pixels should really help.

btw, this is a shot of the centre of a flower, and it's about 6mm across the frame of this image.

I had that lens and sold it...Went with the Canon EF 28mm ƒ/1.8 USM.

I found it has better contrast and was more sharp than the Siggy. It also is lighter, smaller and focuses faster.

When I got the Siggy I was all happy...until I held the 28mm. Canon is Canon...and yeah I am a Canon follower.

BTW your close up pics are soft and I bet your not the proble. The lens is off for sure. Bad wrap on those Sigma 30's.check it.

Here is a pic of my soft Canon 28 at f/1.8...Raw > jpg untouched and hand held at 1/60 iso 100. It'sd a crumb, not a booger.

Thx

Nice booger! :p I have this lens and a 7D as well. Haven't had time to really try it out and or micro adjust it yet but looking forward to seeing what it can do.

I decided to try the lens as well. Got it a few hours ago.
It needed to be adjusted by +15 to focus ok. But then it seems like i got myself a niiiiice copy of the lens! Much more reliable than my 50/1,4HSM when it comes to focus!
