It needed to be adjusted by +15 to focus ok. But then it seems like i got myself a niiiiice copy of the lens! Much more reliable than my 50/1,4HSM when it comes to focus!

Just as I suspected... Sigma's tend to come out of factory with focus mis-calibration. +15 eeww!

At +15 I would return that lens.

BTW Shapening way overdone. She's young and her skin looks rough.

Why is that, I wonder.

Sigma has been producing many tens of thousands of lenses for many years so you would think that they would have some idea about sending them out the factory door within reasonable focus tolerances.

So either they don't care and ship them poorly calibrated, or they are properly calibrated and find themselves in the hands of owners who have read about Sigma focus issues and go looking for problems. But I can say that you don't have to look too far to find Canon lenses that are not properly focus calibrated when brand new so maybe Sigma is not alone with this problem.

Much of this focus issue is specific to the body that a particular lens is used on .. I have lenses of all brands that are sharper on one body than another. Many parts and areas areas of a camera body affect focus .. the lens mount, and sensor box assembly distance to lens mount will affect focus as well. Anything that can change the distance between the lens and sensor is a factor, and there are many. And my guess is that many of these are manufactured to "acceptable" tolerances which have an adverse affect on lens focus.

Anyways, the bottom line for me is that I now only own bodies with MA.

Sigma is doing their best at COPYING CANON. By Canon...its a better built lens. <<< My opinion.

I Need to say something. I am a seller with 575+ on Ebay and have sold many items here. The one item I still feel bad about is the day I sold my Sigma 30mm 1.4 to a lady here which I think owned a 7D like me. I purchased it from Cametta Camera and it was brand smacking new. I was the first to open the box. I slapped it on my 7d and found I didn't like the finish on it as with all Sigmas they have that flat black look that turns grey and always looks dirty no matter how many times you clean it. So I took a few pics and decided to sell it.

The lady paid top dollar as it basically was brand new and had only take about 30 pics. A few weeks later she PM's me here and say the friggen lens is back focusing and that I had sold here a broken lens. I assuered her that the lens was new and even sent her a copy of my invoice with the lens.

Anyways, more weeks pass by and she PM's me again saying that Sigma had to replace the focus cirucuit board in the lens...free of charge. The point is I have been reading about all the bad 30 and 50 lens. the truth is...if you had to micro adjust it, your Sigma is out of wack...so get it fixed.

I have a 17-40, 70-200, 28mm and 85 mm on my 7D and ALL of them are set to disabled. I even purchsed the Lens Align Pro and the results came back to -1 to a -4 or depending on which end I was using on the lens.

If all CANON lens are spot on then why canon needs to have MA features? Just wondering...

Ive had to send in my 400/5.6L, 70-200IS, 50L, 24-70L, 70-300IS. To be honest. Ive only owned two Canon lenses that didnt need to be fixed at Canon. A 100/2.8 Macro and 50/1,8MKI lol
That was before we got MA tho in our bodys. Oh yea, all was brand new. Everytime the Canon rep confirmed that the focus was in need of adjustments.
On top of that. My 30D, my 40D and my 1Dmk3 all needed to be adjusted for focus as well lol.
If i send in my 7D body im sure its a bit off as well. Too sad i dont own any of my calibrated lenses anymore

Time for an update. The Sigma was out by +2. That's all - and it took a whole minute of my time to micro-adjust it, which seems like a doddle to me.

Moving on to this shot (just before micro-adjusting) - it was on a night out with some friends doing a LOT of drinking and eating, followed by some good ol' karaoke. Well, I've come from a 30D, so if you check out the EXIF you'll see ISO1250. This is astounding!
For anyone from the film days, ISO1000 was pretty much the limit - and the pictures were mostly grainy in an "arty" way, 'cos that was the only way the shots could be.
Well, the next day I did some testing up to ISO12500 and if you shoot carefully (ie, frame as near to 100% of the viewfinder as possible, and get as little "black" in the shot as you can) it's 100% usable.
These latest cameras are simply excellent.
I know the 5D2 is supposed to be a stop or two better, but still, I'm super-impressed with those geeks at Canon Central!
