I purchased a used 70-200 from Adorama this past weekend

While using it I noticed a couple of things:

1: Sometimes, the lens will not stop down the aperture...for example, I'll dial in f11 but lens will stay open at around 4.5. Resulting in overblown pictures...

Reseating the lens *sometimes* works.

sometimes this will solve it, or the lens throws up ERR01

2. I know there is to be some degree of softness/CA at f2.8...but shouldn't these issues be going away by say...5.6?

I test drove the lens at an outdoor (very bright sunlight) event after purchase, and the aperture issues started to drive me up the wall. I put it back in the bag and used my 28-70 f2.8L for the rest of the day with nary a hiccup.

any thoughts? Or should this one go back to Adorama for a refund?

Incidentally, how long does it usually take Adorama to refund the money?

Not passing the buck here, I promise, but I think the best thing in the first instance may be to have a word with one of the Sigma technicians:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/contactus (external link)

This link will take you to the contact page where you can call or email and figure out the problem (I could do it for you, but my experience is that they usually prefer to talk to someone actually holding the unit to run through possible options).
If you need to return it, let me know and we'll get a pre-paid label out to you. It generally takes up to 5 business days to process a return.

Drop me an email directly if I can help with anything else.

Send it in to Sigma. They will fix it and will be perfect. This is a great lens.

Work through Helen at Adorama. She is excellent to work with based on the posts I have read on fredmiranda.com

She will make it right for you.
