Yeah Jeff, I debated on that a bit, from that particular vantage point even to the naked eye, the boards seem to go up, could go either way with the framing but, I didn't change it from as shot. But looking at it again, I think you're right. Thanks!

Nice pictures, Ward!

I take quite a few sports pictures myself. Mostly of my teenage sons. However, I have a hard time with getting the hockey pictures to come out as good as my basketball and other indoor pictures do. For some reason the lighting in hockey rinks do me in. I use a Canon EOS XSI. What ISO/Shutterspeed/ etc...settings are you using to get these excellent shots? I'd sure like to know so I can get a few good one's of my boys out there... I also shoot the Colorado Avalanche, Colorado College Tigers, and Airforce Falcons hockey teams too, with mixed results as well..

BTW, this is my first post here too..

I look forward to seeing more.

Those shots were taken with a 50D and a 70-200 f/2.8 at ISO 1600 and a shutter of 300-400.

Welcome to the site. The problem with hockey is that the ice confuses the camera's meter, especially as you move the camera around so that there are different proportions of ice to spectators. Best thing to do is go down by the ice before the game and use a gray card to set manual exposure settings. Should set a custom WB while you are there.

Hockey shots from a recent game: http://www.flickr.com …72157623920104768/detail/ (external link)
All of the "on ice" shots used a 7D and 100-400 at ISO 1600, f/7.1 and I think 1/250 shutter.

You guys are pretty fortunate to be able to shoot with a 70-200 and 100-400. Our local arena (Joe Louis) prohibits lenses beyond 80mm unless you have a press pass.

The only lenses I have below 80mm are a 17-40L and a 11-16, neither of which are well suited for action.

Just as well I suppose.. I'm usually pretty busy at hockey games screaming & drinking beer.

At Verizon Center in DC the website used to say something like "no professional cameras" but when I talked to the people at the gate and the people working in guest services they all said "no video cameras, no tripods and nothing so big that it gets in the way of the people sitting around you." Sometime in the past year the website has been updated to say photography is OK so long as you are using a "handheld still camera."

That's nice that they liberalized the gear standards. At the Joe there are signs all over the place & PA announcements as you enter reminding guests about the 80mm limit.

The restrictions you describe are similar to Comerica Park (Tigers baseball) if I understand it right.

Funny, I think baseball is the only pro sport in DC that does have a limit on size. Something like 6" or shorter.
