What kinda things should I be aware of.

I'm going from OSX 10.4.11 Panther on my G5 Power pc to 10.5.6 Leopard. That's the last update available for the non Intel Macs. I'm guessing some of my old software like iMovie or Garage band and stuff like that may not work on the new OS. Maybe it will. I'm not sure.
So what should I look out for?

Thanks

Not much really. It's all pretty much straight forward. Some people say not to load all the printers and languages, but later on some software (like PSCS4) wants some printers and other languages. The thing that I do three partitions. The OS, 50GB, the Windows partition, 50GB, and a work drive with 400GB. This way I can alter each partition as I see fit. An up side is usually the work stuff (photos and video for me) are constantly in flux which means the likelihood of fragmentation. This way your OS wont get all scattered around the HDD. If you have multiple hard drives or don't need/have windows then you could do things differently. Otherwise, Leopard defrags on the fly (the HDD will also delay writes to consolidate files) and the OS is more intelligent than previous versions.

Have you upgraded to the newest iTunes? If you have, reinstall it. Maybe the helper service isn't running. I'd also fix permissions and then run the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts as well as clear the OS cache (all in OnyX). I'd also use a different cable, restart the machine, confirm the iPod is working on another machine, update the OS to 10.5.6 and if all else fails create a new user and try there (means corruption of permissions/user id)... you know, the usual stuff.

Have you upgraded to the newest iTunes?

Yup iTunes 9

reinstall it

How would I do that? Just a warning: I'm a computard

Maybe the helper service isn't running

How would I find out if it is or isn't?

I'd also fix permissions

Did that.

run the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts as well as clear the OS cache (all in OnyX)

Didn't know about those. AFAIK 10.4 didn't have that. 10.5 does?

I'd also use a different cable, restart the machine, confirm the iPod is working on another machine, update the OS to 10.5.6

Did all those and updated the software to 10.5.8

if all else fails create a new user and try there

Once again. How would I do this. I've never had to do any of this. This is the first time my old iMac has ever had any problem of any kind.

If explaining all this to me is too much of a hassel I understand and won't take offense.

Thanks

Here's the link to reinstall iTunes (link (external link)).

To make a new user and to check if the helper service is loading to to System Preferences > System > Accounts. Click "Login Items" and there should be something called iTunesHelper. The scripts can be run by installing OnyX (link (external link)). BACKUP before going any further with OnyX. Open OnyX, let it do it's checks, enter Admin Pass, then click Maintenance and then Scripts then Execute. It will take a little while to run.

Hope that helps.

Started the iTunes uninstall. One thing though, I didn't see the iTunes helper in the activity monitor. Maybe that's the problem? I hope so.

Well that was it. Problem is iTunes only transferred the songs I bought from iTunes which was 850. So now I have to reload the other 1750 songs from CD collection. Bummer, but at least it now works

When I hit 10,000 songs and videos I knew that any reloading would take forever. So, I placed my iTunes libraries (3 of them) on separate drives and I let iTunes organize my libraries. That way, when I reload iTunes on another machine or start from scratch, all I have to do is hold down the shift key when iTunes first starts and it asks me the location of the library. It takes about ten minutes to load all 10,000 objects; album art, playlists, and all other information is already there ready to go. I do professional video so I have to be able to move my royalty free elements (video, audio and drops) to different computers (Mac and PC). Carrying around a 1TB external from work to home is extremely simple :)

And I'm glad it was something easy - though it's a pain to put everything back. That's why I mentioned partitioning your drives up above. Makes life so much simpler if you only have to deal with one project at a time (i.e. just the OS, or just the photo's or just your iTunes library).

Thanks you thank you thank you for your advice and patience.

One more question: The iTunes on the computer just has the stuff I bought from iTunes but the iTouch itself still has all 2100 and some songs on it. So how do I get those into the computer?

If they were purchased from the iTunes store all you have to do is "Transfer Purchases from iPod" and it will put the songs back into your iTunes library. If you didn't then you'll have to get a third party software package to pull them back off your iPod and put them back into your library. There's a couple of free ones out there but I use Evom and iRip, but there are free ones out there. I'll see if I can remember one of their names if you didn't purchase your music from Apple.

Cool, thanks

The music it didn't transfer from the touch to the computer is all the CD's from my collection.
