If you're doing portraits, then out of those two I'd get the 24-70. It would give you a nice FL range for portraits on a crop sensor and the smaller DoF for subject isolation, that being said I would get a sigma 30/1.4 and EF 85/1.8 if I were to do it, and save money over the 24-70L.

If you're on the 50D, get the tamron 17-50 or canon 17-55 IS. They are both quality glass.

If you can affor it go with the 24-70, but the 17-40 is an awesome lens too though but you'll probably want to upgrade

Either could be ok for environmental portraiture where you are showing the subject within a scene, but even 70mm may be just short as far as having a good perspective for head shots and closeups. Then again, some great photographer did closeups with a 50mm on 35mm film, so i guess is really depends on your own style and how you see portraiture.

The Canon 17-55IS and Tamron 17-50 are much sharper on crop models than the 17-40 f/4L

I see this statement quite a bit on the forum. Why is that? I agree with the statement but don't know why it's the case. I owned a 24-105 L and it just didn't perform as well as the 15-85 on my 50D.

Agree that Many people said 17-55 is Sharper lens in crop Cam. But it is expensive

I feel I will go with 17-40 ..
