My favorite lens for "just getting going" would have to be the Tamron 17-280 VC superzoom. It's light weight, covers most needs distance-wise (17mm is fairly wide) for most of what you seem to want, and their image stabilization (VC) beats any of the Canon lenses in the same price range, as far as I'm concerned.

It's a great way to have a "good enough" lens to figure out what you want upgrade to when you get better glass. And the IQ on this lens is absolutely nothing to sneer at, it's a good, sharp lens that just needs light at the long end. But you'll find that to be the same limitation on almost any zoom short of moving into the "L" line and/or price range.

Congrats on sticking to your guns on the T2i; I think you'll find you've got a very capable body there.

It's a good deal for a new lens, just make sure you're buying from a reputable place where you can return stuff, no questions asked if decide not to keep it.

look at www.adorama.com refurbished - $200 (free shipping and one year warranty) from what I've seen 'refurbished' looks new

That's what I did, the lens actually comes sealed in a Canon white box with a year warranty for $200 including shipping, can't see anything wrong with that at all!

No wonder that felt wonky when I typed it

personally if your friends are fan boys regardless of nikon or canon its hard to say that a lower end DSLR can pack as much of a punch as the t2i has, if your interest in video AT ALL, go t2i, if your know and the size and feel of having a better body matters go d90, I personally went t2i

I have been dead set on buying the T2i and I found a Best Buy that had one for sell...and I got it. However, some of my camera buddies were nagging on me about how the D90 was still superior and only two hundred bucks more for a better AF, body, button layout and options...

They also told me that the sensor was the same size as the Ti and increasing the pixel doesn't mean better quality - especially since the sensor size is still the same.

Please...please help a confused guy before he opens the T2i box. I understand this is a Canon forum - but, please give good advise. Thanks guys!

I believe he already posted he went with the T2i. I looked at buying a D90 for about a year and when I finally went to a camera store to purchase one, I walked out with a T2i instead. I think excellent pictures can be taken by both, but the features of the T2i won me over. I haven't looked back since.

I would also pick the newer T2i/550D over the older Nikon
