I got asked this question over on Flickr, and here was my answer:

The ice went in with the help of an assistant and was dumped out less than 2 minutes later with only minimal amount of moisture in it. To be safe it sat out for over 24 hours after the shot just to be careful... I also keep at least one Pelican rechargable Silica Gel pack in all five cases that I own to keep moisture out.

That is awesome.

Would be brutal if it knackered your dividers.

That was real ice? I assumed it was prop ice made of plastic!

If you read the above post I was pretty careful and quick...

Yes it was real ice... I'm a big fan of doing it right in camera as well as doing something real unless it really wouldn't be possible or safe. In this case it's just some dividers in a single case. To me the shot was worth the risk...

No gel, and no pinkish cast in the image on my calibrated monitors.

i see pinkish tones in 1) the upper right hand corner (might have been post processed) 2) the black accessory compartment at the top, and 3) a very slight green tinge on the left side of the seamless paper.

Might be my monitor, but i've never had any issues with printing with my computer

Sorry guy, I think your mind is playing tricks on you... the edges have been burnt down and the tones go to darker grey but I'm not seeing any real color. If you get your handy Photoshop Color picker out you'll realize that what your seeing amost totally a tonal gradation that has very little color value in it.

The only thing with real color is in the business card plastic case where it's reflecting something in part of the plastic window. So I don't see any 'color cast' which is something I would usually consider something that is coloring the entire image or a large portion of it, it's just not there...

I guess I should post some photos of what I normally put in my camera cases when I'm not shoving ice and beer in them...

I posted a few of these photos over in the still-life group a few weeks back.

They are Pelican 1530's, which I don't think Pelican sells anymore... I think the closest Pelican gets is likley the 1560 or maybe the somewhat shallower 1550.

If I had to buy them again, I would have just bought them empty and not have bought the pick/plug foam. After a few years of pretty regular use the foam is starting to seperate a bit. So if I had to do it again for the lighting gear (which doesn't change in config, unlike my camera cases) I'd buy the case empty and then have a local company measure out and custom cut the inserts. I'm in Columbus Ohio and Cabbage Cases (external link) is in my back yard and they will custom cut a much higher quality foam to fit my cases and do it for a really reasonable rate.
