So I'm wanting to start getting into some more off camera flash stuff, possibly some studio work. I've already got the 430EXII and the Cactus V4 trigger and 2 receivers are on the way. Would the 540EZ be a good match with this setup? I'm still new to the lighting world and honestly don't know much about it. I've heard some things about problems using the 430EXII for an optical slave. I'm just wondering what else I would need to make this setup work. I searched, but there's just not a lot of info on the Canon 540EZ out there. Thanks in advance for any advice!

540ez is a very nice manual flash. It is like 550ex without the eTTL part.

The 540ez is a nice manual flash. I've got one and use it with Cactus v4s and a 24" Lastolite Ezybox. The only downside is they don't have a syncport, so you have to either use the Cactus hotshoe mount, or do the DIY mod on the flash.

Still, awesome flash for the money. Mine pairs extremely well with my 580exII for off-camera stuff.

I have four 540EZ - What do you want to know? I use them with my 580EX II all the time :)

Typical setup would be the 540's off camera and the 580EX II for on-camera fill, if needed, often with a Ray Flash fitted as well.

yes but I hear they are a little pricey,I only have the 580ex2 but want to start off shoe stuff, and saw that the older 540ezs go fairly cheap, how well do you think the cactus v2s or v4 would perform for just starting out?

The V4 triggers are great bang for your buck and a nice way to get started in off-camera flash without cables lying all over the place :)
