Hi, I have been trying my hand at a bit of image manipulation. Just trying to cut out different things and put in other images etc.

I am finding it all quite taxing with a mouse. Do anyone use a pen or such with this kind of work, and would you advise them.

The other question is do any of you use channels for masking and how do you find it?

I watched a great tutorial from "beke" on masking with channels. It was so much to take in though.

Ian

Yes, a graphics tablet is fantastic. If you get one, you'll feel as clumsy as a toddler with a crayon for about the first week. But if you persevere, you'll be used to it in no time, and you'll love it!

Best graphics tablet?

Hi, can anyone advise me on the best graphic tablet set up.

This would be new for me but i am at the point where I think one will benefit my editing.

Cheers
Ian

There are many brands of tablets out there. Think of it like cars. All of them drive, but you pay a premium for name and the luxuries associated with it.

Personally I have a Wacom Intuos4 medium. This is one of the luxury models and it cost me around the $400 after taxes and shipping. This supports 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, plus stylus angle detection. Wacom has great drivers and is widely used by many photo professionals.

There are others out there but I cannot comment on the build quality.

I have a Cintiq 12wx on my main editing desktop pc, an Intuos4 medium on my other desktop and I bought a Bamboo pen & touch for my laptop. I would agree that one feels a little awkward in the beginning but once you get the hang of if, they are a godsend. I have known a few people that just hated them and went back to their mouse.

Which one is right is a matter of personal preference. I love the Cintiq but they are quite expensive in the grander scheme of things. The Bamboo is a great starter if you are hesitant about whether this is what you want to do long term. Our local Best Buy has some of the Intuos brand hooked up to some laptops that you can play with but not in Photoshop. You might want to check that route. You might want to look at your workspace in your office as the Intuos has multiple sizes. I found the medium sized one to be good for me. It has a footprint of 15x10" but its work surface (the part you do the pen work on) is about 9 x 5 ish. I personally would not want a work surface that is any smaller.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

We use Wacom Intuos3s - I use a 6x11" for my 24" monitor and it's a very good fit. It makes photoshop work much, much easier and I find it to be a lot better for my wrist. My wife uses a 4x6" for her laptop work and neither of us have used a mouse since buying them.

I was told a lot before I got mine that it would be awkward at first. I don't know why but I took to it as if I've always used one, and instantly fell in love! This is just an old one that a friend loaned me for a while, nothing fancy. Sometimes I'll swap between it and a mouse, but it rocks. I have friends who won't use anything else. As for channels, it depends on what program you're using..
