Scarborough Harbour - trying something new.

I shot straight into the sun with the intention of getting the sun jst like this, with it's reflection in the ripples of the harbour. I then used Split Toning (is that what it's called?) in ACR. So, these images WERE what I intended...my question - are they any good? And, Do people like them?

very cool! I see a lot of kind of lame looking split toning but I like that you're not just following the masses, you're actually putting some thought into it and making it unique. I definitely like colour better. Part of the "coolness factor" is the red light reflecting on the path and buildings. In b/w it's rather boring..

Thanks - about the split toning: being colour blind, I can't really do "subtle" so quite a few of my shots, whether split toned or not are a little less subtle. I get it wrong a lot, but I am glad you like this one - I do.

My personal tastes prevents me from any real enthusiasm over #1, but I think #2 would make a very nice shot if you were able to bring some detail into the deeper shadows, which are just too black and which are heavily clipped.

The sun disc in this scene completely destroys any hope of getting the dynamic range under control. One way around that would have been a gradient neutral density filter. If you intend doing many scenes like this, you may want to consider investing in such a filter.
