Not sure if this is the absolute best, but it was an image I took today with my newly IR converted 40D. Loads of fun and lots to still learn!

Took this pic last night and really liked it, 40D with 10-22mm lens at 10mm for 1500 seconds or so.

how to make sure that the camera remains steady for so long, i.e., the wind and other things?

I'm blown away by some of the pics here--and humbled. Here are a few of my birding shots through the 40D, using the Canon 400 f/5.6L. Still on the learning curve both with the camera and the lens, but starting to become happier with my results.

Suppose it goes without saying that these are downscaled crops.

Number two; suppose a circular polarizer would have improved this one...

Last one. Really showcases, I think, the bokeh, contrastiness and color rendition of the 400 5.6.

OK, just one more---not a bird, a niece! This is probably the only human-subject photo I've been truly pleased with, and this 30% downscale really doesn't do it justice. This was the 40D using, of all things, the Tamron 18-270. I've taken some decent pic with that combo, but this one at 100% is tack sharp. It was at 270mm, f/6.3, 1/250th and (I think this was key) ISO 100, because the lighting was very favorable.
