Since you asked specifically about ON camera flash, I'll share my favorite resource for such things...

Specifically check out this part: http://neilvn.com …h-photography-techniques/ (external link)

Lots and lots of great info there, and his book is good stuff too.

I completely agree that Neil van Niekerk has the best blog and book covering the subject of ON camera flash.

Neil also runs a two day workshop that fully covers both on and off camera flash as well as shooting in both TTL and Manual mode. These workshops are top notch with small sizes and LOTS of hands on shooting with 4 models over the two days.

Day 1 of the workshop takes place at the Hyatt in Jersey City which is right on the Hudson River and overlooks downtown Manhattan- absolutely killer views! Both of the pictures on Neil's blog entry about his workshop were taken at the Hyatt during the last workshop.

Day 2 of the workshop takes place in NYC in the meatpacking district and then in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn where the backdrop for the day's shoot includes Manhattan from the opposite site including views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge.

For those who have the ability to attend the July 12-13 or September 13-14 workshops they are highly recommended and unlike most workshops in terms of both the content and the personal attention to each student receives from Neil.

I wish I could attend his workshop! Does anyone know of a good workshop for flash in the Midwest?
