I'm in a bit of a dilema as to what camera body to purchase. Some of you may have seen my images in the 450D unite thread with the Gannets and saying that these are the last ever images from my 450D which drowned in the sea, no i didn't drop it in the sea, one of the tripod legs collapsed when the sand got washed away by a wave and it tipped over.

Soooo now i have the chance to get anothe cam body but don't know which to get, the 550D is out of stock and by all accounts if i make the order for one i may not get one till the middle to back end of July even into the first week of August, i don't plan to wait for that long, so i'm looking at the 50D instead but i've read so may bad reports that the noise is pretty poor, i don't do a lot of high ISO work and only increase to 400ISO for macro work, surley the 50D would be a bigger upgrade from the 450D, plus i can get the 50D for £600 for a body and i'd get no later than next Wednesday if i make the order on Monday morning.....:D

Never had a noise problem with my 50d up to iso 1600 - never tried higher - never tried JPEG.

I went from a 300D to a 20D to a 50D. Each upgrade was a good one and I wouldn't go back. I also read all of the noise complaints about the 50D and was worried before I bought it. I think most of those complaints come from people who are viewing the pictures at 100% on their screen and going out of their way to find noise.

I took these shortly after getting the 50D a few weeks ago. Just a few quick snaps at high ISO in very bad lighting conditions to see what would happen. All taken at f/2.2 with the 100mm f/2.

Just for something a little prettier, here's one at ISO 1600, hand held for 1/8 second with the 17-55/f.2.8 IS

The 50D is a great buy with very useful upgrades from the 40D one of which the MFA is a great tool. If the above shots don't convince you that the 50D is very capable in high ISO then nothing will. I think user error many times amplifies noise. Make sure you expose properly.

I still have to buy my first DSLR and on another forum I asked if it was silly to go straight for a 50D and I was told no and to go for it.
Quite a few of the members had upgraded from a 40D or 450D to a 50D and love it.

Apparently it's a great camera.
