OK here goes. Please be gentle as this is my first ever shot from my extremely fast delivery of my new toy, the lovely 50D. I orderd the body only yesterday morning at 10:30am and it was at my door at 09:30am this morning, sadly though i'm now waiting for a new 8gig card, at the moment i'd only got a 128mg cf card but it'll do for some practice shots i suppose.

Anyway here it is.......

Awesome. You're based in a valley? isn't that a little dangerous with all the high ground around you?

Wow all the photos posted are amazing!

I was wondering if you guys could help me with a few quick questions, I'm still learning about lenses, its slow going lol. So I'd love your guys help. I really want to get another lens that would be good for portraits and another lens that would be good for macro and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions that were under $700?
One lens I was looking at for portraits is : Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 (external link) What do you all think of that lens?

Thanks a bunch for the help! :D

The Canon 60mm 2.8 macro is a great lens and would suffice for both. Check out samples here:

For portraits you'll be better off with a prime lens, like a 24, 28, 50, or 85mm. You can also get away with a zoom lens for portraits, but I'm not sure about the 18-200. That would probably be a better walk-around lens, than a portrait lens. If you're serious about doing portraits and must have a zoom lens, the 24-70L would be worth the investment.

For Macro, the sigma 105 and 180 macros are excellent lenses, and the Canon 100 F2.8 and the 100 F2.8 IS L lenses are fantastic.

60mm macro should be good...I would say it may be a little short for some macro (have to move closer to the subject), but then again, the 100mm 2.8 macro might be too long for portraits :-(
