.. it's a really nice bit of kit. I know it's a Sony ;) .. but it works really well. Plus if Canon ever get around to supporting HD video with Full Surround Sound audio I'll be covered  At just under $100 brand new it was a steal.

Here's the 7D sporting the new look

Bugger .. I'm not sure.
I guess I'll have to strap on my 70-200 IS and find out. It certainly doesn't pick up any other 'camera' noises.

Chances are it will because those are "transmissive" sounds coming directly through physical contact with the camera body.

I suspect that's why this unit has an isolating rubber mount in the base at the mounting foot to help stop that. I feel this would have more isolation than the on-board mic.

Coming in July is the Samson Zoom H1, that does stereo... for $99. I just bought the Samson Zoom H2, it can do 5.1 surround...Yipee! LOL

If the recording device of choice can encode it...

What do you mean? I can simply use it as a Mic, through the Mic in jack of the camera in stereo or use the SD card to record and sync it in post for 5.1. I bought me a slate as well for easy syncing...LOL...the advantage is that I was a videographer turned photographer...I still have all my audio gear, like the Sennheiser diversified wireless lavs, a pocket mixer and 2 DATS, a TASCAM and a Sony...:D

can this be a sticky? It could be very useful down the road since there seems to be a trend where all dslr's in the near future will feature an HD video too.. just saying..

Would be interested to hear how it sounds, does it control the sounds level before it goes into the camera or is that still down to the camera?

Still i prefer to cheat slightly with sound

Would also be interested to hear if it picks up lens zooming or IS noise. I was looking at the Rode mic that has a nice looking mount but it's about $150.

EDIT: Where did you find the Sony for under $100?

I have my sources ... how many do you want ;);)

I haven't had time to run about outside shooting video .. so I sat in a chair and shot a chair, then a door knob, then the chair, .. you get the picture :)
This isn't real deal stuff .. but it makes the lens work.
Man, that zoom tick of the 70-200IS is bloody annoying. Funny how you don't notice stuff when shooting photos (not video).

So the sound is there when using the 70-200IS .. just a different, less mechanical one when used with the Sony Mic. The on board Mic picking up the lens noise is deeper and slightly more intrusive. The Sony Mic also cuts down on annoying noises from behind the camera (like my heavy breathing) or people talking off camera.

With the 17-40 and on board Mic, shooting in a quiet room you hear an almost woodpecker type sound as the lens focuses. With the Sony you don't hear that sound, but there is an added crispness to the recording.

Prior to me posting this thread, my testing had been shooting with a 17-40 and the Sony Mic vids of the grand daughter running about .. and I was impressed by the clarity and cleaness of the sound recordings compared to the on board one.

I'm going away for 4 days at the weekend .. I guess I'll try some real life testing then.
