It's difficult to tell from the small picture, but it looks like your focus point was on the tree branch instead of the animal. Also, maybe you can use photoshop to lighten up the right (my right, meerkat's left!) eye a bit?

Thank you for your advice I am still learning how to use my camera properly so I will have a go doing what you said :)
