I just posted this photo in the 'trickery' thread but thought it was pretty simple to explain and would fall under 'photoshop art'. Of course there are always more than one way to do this, it worked, so it's good enough for me. ;)
Multiple skulls in flying sand.

IMAGE: http://troyraymond.smugmug.com/photos/917018064_frpWj-L.jpg

I've found that HDR really enhances sand texture. I took the dull sand shot and processed a few single image HDR's, one for the sand, one for the sky and one for the car using Dynamic Photo HDR. The sand shot was blended with the original at 80% layer opacity. The car layer mask only allowed certain parts of the car to show then I flattened the image. HDR was really toned down while tone mapping.

I ran the image though Imagenomic Noiseware Pro cranked way up to smooth everything out then pasted that layer on the new blended image. A layer mask allowed to keep the sky and foreground sand smooth along with parts of the car. Gradient fade used on the sand, brush on the sky and car.

Several skulls were placed over the sand, erased the hard edges with a layer mask and slightly blurred with gaussian blur, then each layer property was switched to screen and the layer opacity adjusted. Each skull was moved until it looked right.

Flatten, then one swipe with a huge brush to burn the sky with a slow fade and a little burn in the dark areas of the sand.

I'm using Photoshop 7, I've got CS3, but my laptop won't handle it. Currently no desktop.

Can't compete with some of the more dramatic posts above (love the skulls in the sand trail, BTW) but here's more fun with textures...

Troy - that sand/skull stuff is wikkid cool! Thanks for the how to. One of my cousins is a bartender and he will take a small mouthfull of everclear and blow fire... I have been trying to take one of his images and put in skulls in the resulting fireball for a while and it never came out correctly. I may try your "tricks" to see if I can get it closer!

Tutorial: Film Light Leak.

Video:
http://vimeo.com/12169639 (external link)

Examples: removed

I viewed the video, but really don't understand what the steps are and I use Photoshop everyday. I use CS3 right now and am on a PC. Whatever the Q option is only closes my image, it doesn't do anything with a Masks layer. So I can't even get to step one. Even if I create a redish mask layer, I can't invert that, nor do the selected field come up because I never created a "quick mask". So I would love to know the steps, even if you just type them. I understand what to do for the most part but can not create the layer mask as you are. Thankx a ton!

Loved these...they are awesome!!

Question..can any one tell me how I can get this kinda 'vintage' look? If you check the the rest of the pics in the photo stream, you'll notice most of them have the this look.

Cut your reds in curves, up your highs to give that "white haze" look
