7D Image quality and focus

yes.

assume your printing the same three shots at the same size. Assume your framing them the same in camera (so using a wider FL on the crop bodies when you shoot it). This means you have ~50% more pixels (but not resolution mind you ) with the 7D and a bit less with the 40D -vs- the 5Dc. So the 7D will have more information to put into the same space. Yes it's information isn't as clean (it's noisier at base ISOs) and it won't be as sharp (the 5D has the weakest AA filter in any DSLR I've seen), but once you squeeze those 18mp into the same space as the 12 from the 5D or the 10 from the 40D, the 7D should be pretty similar.

But that begs the question, if the 7D isn't good when looked at at 100%, does shooting mRAW help (~10mp)? Or should canon have just made it with a 12mp sensor instead of 18 if you never really see the full benefit of all those pixels? More pixels = more memory regardless of their quality, so if it's not help the IQ it's just hurting the speed of the camera, and the space they take after the fact...

I honestly think canon did a good job with the 18mp they put in the 7D. But I also think it's ~50% more than the camera really needed in terms of IQ. They could have made just as good of a final image/print with 12 and the AA filter from the 5Dc (processing has come far enough in 5 years to make 12 on aps-c now look like it did on FF then IMHO) and file sizes would have been more reasonable.

But the marketing department wanted 18mp so they got 18mp....

That's right - blame Canon Marketing Dept., they caused the poor photographer's faulty focus. The OP can give me his 7D, I'll take it off his hands.

watt100 - I appreciate your comments but I've never had any problems with any of the other cameras I've owned. I don't see why posting examples of what I think is a badly focused image makes me a poor photographer?

Please explain what you meant or offer your explanation as to why you think the image is soft?
