Hey all, capured this baby striped possum at keetings lagoon near Cooktown Q.L.D. Australia , he is normally only seen in the far north rainforests ( and not to often ) and he is nocturnal. Cooktown is not a rainforest region and i captured him at 11.00 am.

What a sweetie! It looks a lot like the sugar gliders people keep as pets in the U.S.

They'd be kinda related, both are Australian native marsupials.

I wonder where that little fellas mum was. He looks a bit lost.

Thank you all for your comments. he seemed to be without his mother but being in a national park i couldn't take him so i told the aurthorities about it but i don't think they believed me because he doesn't really belong in this area but when i showed the photo to someone the next day they rushed out to look for him but it was to late by then.Hopefully he found his mum.

Strange, I didn't notice the flies yesterday when I looked at this. I think he was very sick to have flies on him like that. Poor little thing, I suspect he's no longer in the land of the living.

No he is not sick he has a natural pungent odour that attracts the flies

Still, I can't imagine him being out there alone at that age. If he had run up to me with that look about him, I would have put him in my pocket, rules or no. :)

Sorry for the late response but i've been in the bush with no internet.
I did think about taking him but i thought that maybe he just went for a wander without his mum knowing ( you know what kids are like ) so if i took him and then his mother turned up it would have caused her distress.
