Need your opinions guys on two problems as the wife and I are getting a couple of 2nd hand cameras.

I take action/birding shots, so getting a 1DIIn - reckon a 100-400 (as has to be a zoom) or maybe a Sigma 100-300F4. Would you agree ??

The bigger problem is that the wife is getting a 350D - is there a better lens for the money than a Canon 55-250. Would love a Tamron 28-75 but costs much more.

I can get a 350d and 55-250 for £300 UK.....can I get a better lens for this amount (any make). Would consider anything between the 18-135 or 28-75 or 70-200 etc etc for this camera.

???

Thought about that myself, but I need at least 300 and i'm the enthusiastic one :D

The wife just wants a cheap/light set up - she just wonders if 55-250 is her best option for the money.

55-250 is going to the best bang for your buck that you'll find. It is an excellent lens for the money. IQ is great and it has IS. My wife uses it on the XSi and loves it.

You also can't go wrong with the 100-400. I love mine. I think these two lenses will make you very happy.

Equivalent to 320 mm on a full frame, to be accurate.

You guys may be saying the same thing but saying it in different ways but it definitely does matter what body it is mounted on. A 200mm lens on a 1.6 crop sensor is the equivilent of a 320mm lens.

The crop factor on Digital Rebels and the Canon 30D/40D/50D range is 1.6x, while that for the EOS 1D cameras is 1.3x. So if you're using a 200mm lens on a Canon 450D, you'll get the same magnification as you would using a 320mm lens on a Canon 5D (200 x 1.6). On the Canon 1D, it's like using a 260mm lens (200 x 1.3).

The focal length DOES NOT CHANGE.
The field of view changes.
In simple terms, it is the same as taking an image on a full frame body and cropping that image.
The photo is still taken at 200mm, but is the equvalent field of view as 320mm. The 200 does not suddenly become 320.

Rest assured, a 70-200 does not magically become a 112-320 lens on a 1.6 crop body

There are umpteen threads on POTN discussing it and explaining it probably better than I have here.
Also read up on it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_factor (external link)
