I mean, it does reflect how we interact socially, and Jake's story does show how it can play out in the InterWebs, now I'm wondering if some people, especially women, use "gender anonymity" to avoid being treated a bit differently, as in wanting to be treated as "just one of the guys"?

Sure, and not just women:

I realized the same thing with my user name the way it is so I added my name in my signature. Didn't want to be mistaken for Josh....

Or Shad..

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

That's a pretty funny story Jake!

This brings up an interesting question! I am in the habit of being out front with my identity/gender in a forum like this -- I'd rather be called by my own name than by something like, well, any crazy "user name" I could come up with. And, to me it's nice to have a name for someone I'm talking to here, like I'm talking to a real person who could be a friend. If I am faced with responding to a 10-letter "user name" that makes no sense I'm just as likely to skip the name in a response.

And, if you want real confusing it's guys who put a woman's face in their avatar with no distinguishing name...

Now the question is, how do we all feel about being treated in a gender-conscious way? Jake's story definitely was interesting along that lines. I do notice that there can be some difference in how people act toward women on occasion -- is this wrong or at least undesirable? I mean, it does reflect how we interact socially, and Jake's story does show how it can play out in the InterWebs, now I'm wondering if some people, especially women, use "gender anonymity" to avoid being treated a bit differently, as in wanting to be treated as "just one of the guys"?

That is an interesting point about avatars. I'm on model mayhem and lots of photogs (myself included) use a female model as our profile picture because we are trying to shot off our work. Things are a little different there compared to a photography forum obviously.

I haven't made an avatar here because I'm too lazy to resize a picture as well as I'm not sure what to put. I DO remember people better that have a picture though, so perhaps I should!

Thanks for sharing that Jake, and yes I do hide my gender in certain places on the internet, and can shade my voice on the phone when trying to get something handled with certain people. It was a decision to put one of my nicknames Jannie here on POTN instead of my real name Jan which can be perceived as female or male and I have to say it's been a pleasure and a very comfortable experience.

But out there in the general world, well it's different at times, getting better but still different.

I feel left out....I didn't know there was sex on this forum.

I don't fully understand how it works but my daughter does the talking while her boyfriend does the gameplay on some internet game they play together. Very funny listening to guys all over the world give each other greif for getting smeared by a teenage girl.

I've never hidden my gender but I've been harassed over being a female in a predominately male community. I am a moderator on another message board that is maybe 2% female. Before I was married my user name (here, too) was MissKitty5077. Well, it seemed like that was just waving a beacon for every horny male online. Sheesh. I had lots of inappropriate PMs and emails...sometimes I would get hit on within 5 minutes of a new account being created. Some guys used tact, some were full of **** and others were just pathetic in their tactics. Since I changed my name, I've not had a single inappropriate email or PM. All of this was on a different board. I've not had *any* problems here. :)

Ouch!

Nobody told me there was sex here - hidden or otherwise!:cry:

Do I hide sex on the forum? Why yes, of course, this is a family oriented forum! Oh wait...you mean gender. Nah, the nickname gives it away. :-)
