As noted in the other first attempt thread, despite reading up on what needs to be done, the actual practice was a last minute scramble. Also, not being able to find live view button on 5DII in the dark (having recently switched from 40D, I kept pushing 'SET' button, lol) I was never able to focus properly. Still, the fireworks more than compensated for my technical shortcoming.

ISO 100, f/8, varying lengths of exposure from Bulb setting.

Empire State Building was 45 degrees to the left but it was impossible to incorporate in a frame without losing too much fireworks. Hence, the best landmark I could incorporate was The New York Times Building (external link) (it's a handsome new addition to the NYC skyline, albeit it lacks in landmark status).

Stunning work, I can see the after smoke effect that you were referring to.

Great job! The people in the very last photo look extremely close...but I imagine that must be an optical illusion. I mean, they're not that close...are they?

I like #4 the best... the fireworks are large enough that they don't leave me yearning to peek around the building on the right to see them... all in all... great job, nice images - i'm jealous

Last uploaded one, silhouette's of the people make it for me. Love it.

Also really like the capture on #4, right on point.

Thank you all!

Beginner's luck it is. Also, the subject was the famous Macy's 4th of July Fireworks which helped a lot.

#4 is a shot from the grand finale sequence when the fireworks are especially bigger, brighter, and badder.

The 5th one is a very tight crop from a shot taken with the same setup as #1-#4 (105mm). As a result, it looks as if it is taken by a supertelephoto with its stacked effect. In reality, there's probably about 3/4 to 1 mile between the fireworks and those silhouettes. I did not notice those rooftop figures until the shots were imported on my desktop.

Couple more from near the beginning of the sequence (shot @ 45mm):
