Is it really necessary to spend 170+ on a hoya pro1 cpl or would something like this: http://www.adorama.com/VVCPL72.html (external link) be just as good?

I have NO problem spending the money if I have to, but would like to save some if the quality is the same...your opinions?

I get kenko pro1 filters. I've heard they are the same company as Hoya, but much cheaper.

I have always found the Marumi Super DHG (or DHG) to be the best quality and value. I don't like the Hoya or Kenko in general as I find them harder to clean and no cheaper and the B+W are very expensive where I am. (I tend to buy the Marumi from two different ebay powersellers, one in US the other in HK).

Also Lenstip tested a heap of C-Pol filters and gave the number 1 spot to the Marumi Super DHG and number 4 to the cheaper Marumi DHG.

Question, why would you pay $170 when you could get it for $90 on ebay, before cashback? I got a 77mm Hoya Pro1D CPL for $75 shipped (after all discounts). I can't imagine anyone would NEED to pay more.

You can buy the Kenko Pro1 D's (also 77mm) for $65 shipped. Obviously, smaller filter sizes are less espensive.

better to go with the best CPL available I think. You don't want a crappy filter in front of quality glass.

Sometimes people need things TODAY and can't wait a week for something to be shipped.

Ebay filters don't always leave me with confidence in their authenticity. I am sure most are fine, but there sure are a lot of knockoffs out there.

No, you can get better. The B+W MRC Kaesemann in 77mm size is less than $150 at Maxsaver. The price is even less for smaller diameter B+W filters. Don't skimp on a CPL...get a good one and it'll last you quite a long time. I also wouldn't put too much weight on the Marumi ranking at the lenstip site...they flat-out say that the recommendation was due mainly to its price/performance ratio (meaning, for an inexpensive filter it performed okay). Lenstip also goes on to say that the B+W Kaesemann is pretty much the top filter. There have been a few Marumi threads in this forum, but the images taken with a Marumi seem to have a pretty noticeable blue color cast. IMO, you won't go wrong with a B+W...

For that matter, if you don't want the Kaesemann version, the standard F-Pro MRC version with BRASS rings is about $130 at Maxsaver (of course, it depends on the size of the filter diameter...this is for the 77mm filter):

x2 for Maxsaver. It's the only place I would consider buying filters... they are rediculously priced everywhere else!

I've seen some people getting what appear to be phonies from Maxsaver, too, though. Like filters with sloppy logos on them, etc.

You can buy used filters, which are usually pretty well priced.

That argument that contributes nothing really. He was talking about having it shipped from Adorama, so he OBVIOUSLY is not averse to having it shipped.

If you need something shipped today, go to your local camera store and bite the bullet.

That's been beaten to death in this and other forums...too much paranoia IMO with regard to filters, people freaking out because some Australian dealer (Mainline) blogs about baseless claims, etc. With the exception of a few specialty polarizing filters from Singh-Ray, all of my other round filters are B+W (CPLs, NDs) and I get them all from Maxsaver (as do many others). And never had any issues...

+3 about Maxsaver. I just got my 77mm B+W Kaesemann yesterday from them.

I've bought from a variety of sources including Max, no problems.

Definitely invest the money in your CPL - you invested money in your lens, why piss that away by using cheap glass in front of it?

There was a comparison chart of all the main CPLs out there and it clearly showed the B+W Kaesemann was the best, hands down.

I believe mainline just try to push FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) to justify their high prices compared to popular stores like maxsaver..

As for poorly printed labels and other slight cosmetic inconsistencies, I have seen them from official distributors too, in themselves one or two people on the net showing a misprinted name on a filter doesn't prove a thing.
