I tested it against the only other copy they had in the local shop and that might have been marginally sharper, but shooting barcodes doesn't seem like much of a test.

Wondering what to do next.

Did you only try it at f/1.8? Because the lens is indeed missing some sharpness there. At f/4 - f/8 this lens is significantly sharper. Maybe you should try that, or try shorter exposures.

I did try that, pushed up the ISO to get F5.6 1600, focus was on centre of the picture.
