I currently have a XSi with the 18-55 kit lens and a 50mm f1.8. I'm looking to replace the kit lens in some fashion as I feel like I often wish it would do "more" for me.
I'd like to get better low light (indoor) shooting power and an overall increase in image quality. The difficulty I'm having is I'm not sure what to replace it with. Part of me feels like I should get a wider prime (the Sigma 30mm f1.4 is tempting) for low light power. But the other part things I should grab a zoom (something with decent range) because I'll be taking a trip to Tokyo later this year and I'm not sure carrying around just my 2 Primes is going to be the best situation for walking around.
I can't just buy both, this is strictly a hobby for me and I'm going to be spending enough money on the trip itself. So I'm asking for a bit of help and guidance here. I'm looking to spend under $500 on this lens but could go slightly over if it made a big difference in what I'm buying.
So should I grab the wider prime and attempt to make that work on the trip? I suppose I could carry the kit lens with me too, but I don't want to change lenses much when I'm wandering around a crowded city in a country I've never been to. Or grab a decent zoom (Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Canon 17-85, or other options) and just carry that with me and not have to try and change lenses. I'm open to suggestions on different lenses. The pictures I take in Tokyo will mainly be general city shots and snapshots. Outside of my trip I take general pictures (pretty much anything and everything, I've been taking a lot of snapshot type pictures at parties and events I go to with friends).
