Does anyone have an idea on how much a staff photographer would get paid on average in NY? i know it depends on publication

You said it yourself. It depends on the publication, the part of New York, the area of photography,...Too many things unanswered to really tell you.

if you are trying to get a staff job at any of those by sending unsolicited portfolios at this moment in time... well, let's just say that those should be pretty epic portfolios
