Posterization in FireFox

I have a strange issue with posterization when viewing images on my Zenfolio pages in Firefox.

Here is an example of one of the images:

http://www.martinneep.com/portraits/hccb0d8d#hccb0d8d (external link)

If I look to the right of his shoulder, there is some rather unpleasant posterization.

The strange thing is, if I right click and choose 'share this image' and copy one of the URLs directly into the Firefox address bar, the resultant image displays normally!

e.g. http://www.martinneep.com/img/s5/v4/p214633869-4.jpg (external link)

Viewing my Zenfolio pages in IE shows no posterization whatsoever. At first I thought this might have been my montitor, so I recently purchased a brand new BenQ, which displays exactly the same trait!

What is causing this issue, I'm desperately trying to get to the bottom of it!

Ok, switching off my spyder Elite calibration makes it worse! However, I've just viewed my images on another PC, using the same version of Firefox, and the posterization is not there!

So if it's not the monitor, Firefox or my calibration, what can it be?

I've recently also upgraded to Windows 7, but this has made no difference. Exactly the same posterization was present in Vista?????

Those links show pretty small images, too small for my ability to perceive what you're talking about. Can you show an enlarged image, or even better, a selected portion of this image that is enlarged enough so that we can see the problem?

It sounds from what you are saying that different photo site use a different process to "shrink" a photo to a good viewing size. In general, it's good to know what size your site resizes to and match that. But, if the exact same image shows different characteristics when "shared", then I agree something is off...

Do you have the latest version of Firefox? And do you have it set for full color management?

In the URL box, type in about:config
Click the "I'll be careful" button
Scroll down to the line for gfx.color_management.mode and set it to 1.

Yes, I have the latest version of Firefox. I have followed your steps and set colour management to 1, but the problem still exists.

As this issue has remained through all versions of firefox, and has been apparent in both Vista and Windows7, would it be wrong to assume that this is a graphics card problem?

You will also need to specify the monitor profile within the browser. I have installed the color management addon for firefox, where I then have the option to choose the spyder profile for my monitor. I'm pretty certain you can follow the steps outlined above and specify the path to the ICC profile, however.

ie: gfx.color_management.display_profile;C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color\SyncMaster 2333HD(Digital)-1.icm

The reason that IE is not demonstrating the fault is most likely because it's not a color managed browser.

You actually don't need to if its specified as the default for the OS. It will be automatically used.

Someone recenty posted this blog about jpeg compresstion but they also mentioned artifacts popping up in Firefox. This was the first I had heard about it, and may be related to other issues, but you might want to check it out for any informations. He mentions it at the end of his presentation and it comes up during the comments as well:

I'm so determined to get to the bottom of this!

I've been looking at other people's Zenfolio pages and they are showing the same artifacts on my monitor.

Attached is a screen capture, does anyone else see the uneven tones in the background? It's more apparent if you look down on the monitor from above.

Here is the link for the original... (external link)

If by uneven tones do you mean areas that are not black, as in they are not actually black?

No, in the transition between the black areas and the lighter areas there is some purple / green coloured banding and pixelation.

Looks like the way you processed the photo. See if its in the native RAW file with no adjustments.

Hmm, this is a straight grayscale image with no duotone or split tone stuff going on, right? I don't see this you are talking about -- it may be an issue with your monitor. But I'm working from a small laptop at the moment and my eyes ain't what they used to be...

I've now looked at this on 3 different monitors (all in Firefox), and I don't see anything wrong
