iPhone 4 camera

I got a new G11 a month or two ago and am thrilled by the improvements in the images over my G9 , especially at higher ISO's.

A few days ago I got my iPhone upgrade from the 3Gs to the 4. I have used the iPhone cameras all along and would post the photos amongst my friends on facebook. But I always had to really pump them up in iPhoto or LR.

I mean face it, it's a cell phone camera but that was part of the challenge and for what it was, I sometimes got some neat shots just because it was with me.

I posted a bunch of photos on faceboog last night from the iPhone 4 that I did absolutely no processing to and am amazed. I haven't even tried to mess with anything in Lightroom 3, it is weird though, some of my DNG files are 3.7MB, that seems awfully large. Some had some crazy but expected artifacts in the sky and others were pretty darn good considering.

So what does this mean, and remember that is a freaky tiny sensor, what will Canon be able to come up with next generation and yes I'm one of those waiting for Canon to come out with the worlds best larger sensor point and shoot. I'm still fantasizing a G12 that is larger but has a full frame sensor (and no shutter lag) I really do think there is a place for this in a compact point and shoot camera with a retractable zoom.

And oh guess what, the iPhone has no shutter lag- None, this means it can be done!

These are from the iPhone 4, with no corrections and the late sun color is pretty much like it was, it's also amazing what the camera will to blend in white balance from different sources. Of course they look a lot better in lightroom before being reduced and posted here.

Now here's one I also did some sharpening/color and a little noise reduction

The photos look great! I guess I'll have to put my iPhone 4G to work now . . .

There is an interesting video clip at Fstoppers.com that did an entire beauty photo-shoot using an iPhone, just to prove that it isn't necessarily the equipment but the photographer. Here is the link:

Take care!

Jannie,

If you want a real kick with the iPhone 4 (you have to do an easy mod to it to get the iPhone 4 to stay put in the frame) try the OWLE Bubo (do a google lookup on it).

It is funky looking BUT if you add a silicon case of nearly *any* kind to the iPhone 4 it will stay put firmly in the OWLE Bubo. You just add some self stick fuzzy part of velcro to the sides of the OWLE Bubo where the iPhone sets in. Originally it was designed for the iphone 3G series.

The killer part is the OWLE is threaded for standard 37mm video cam lenses (cheap and prolific!). It ships with a macro/wide angle. So purchasing a telephoto and/or fish eye is chump change compared to L glass for a DSLR.

And if you think the very nice results you got with the iPhone 4's standard lens were cool. Try adding lenses!!!
And the OWLE while funky looking helps in doing video. The design and mass seems to help keep the video smooth and steady on all three planes.

I mounted the Bogen standard QR plates on all four corners so I can slap it onto any legs or sticks I have (think upside down doing "doggy cam" with a monopod).

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

Super-noise reduction, tiny aperture, small chip. If you don't care about DOF, it's passable.

But you can't violate the laws of light behavior and optics.

It'll work fine for most consumers.

Seems way better. Subjective call but seems consensus between 4 other togs I shoot with that have 'em.

I just wish they'd have made it 64gb storage. I've used up 31.5gigs already just with sea and land nav map apps and maps. Some portfolio shots on board but mostly regular apps and A/R apps.

They also make a Gorillapod for the iPhone, plus a free iPhone App. Not certain of fit for iPhone 4.
