Great series Jurgen. Nice to see ethnic people from other countries and you have captured them brilliantly!

Part #5..

You'll notice that all these images are of women.. It's the women in these ethnic groups that keep the cultures alive, they are the ones who'll wear traditional clothing more then men..

A couple more.. The first one is a Hmong woman who I spotted in the markets in Muang Sing Luang Namtha Province near the Chinese border..

The second is a Tai Lue woman..

A couple more.

Akha woman displaying her headwear. Those are silver coins sewn into headwear. Akha women tend to wear their wealth on their heads.

Hey OP, great pictures of the diverse cultures up there in Laos! Glad you're still updating your old thread. My ethnicity is Mien (post#4) but I am Mien-American. My parents are from there and it's funny how they can look at someone and their clothing and tell which ethnicity they are. When random people I encounter ask me what I am I almost always tell them I'm part Thai and part Laos, only to avoid the "What's that?" question :)

Hello Joe,, thanks for your reply. Clothing especially is so indicative of culture and ethnicity. It's mostly women who keep their cultures alive. Laos is incredibly ethnically diverse, especially the north. You can go into regions and most don't even use Lao language but their own ethnic languages.

Some years ago I bought a shirt in a remote Hmong village in northern Laos. It has a pattern embroidered on it. A few months later I was in Sa Pa in far north western Vietnam. A young Black Hmong woman plying her wares recognised the pattern as Hmong and asked where I got it as it wasn't quite the same as the patterns in her region, but similar.

Remote northern Laos is a very interesting part of SE Asia.

A friend of mine is the foster mother of a Mien/Yao boy. He lives with her in Vientiane and is being educated here.
