Thinking about selling my canon rebel xt to upgrade. What do you think I can get for it? Second what is your opinons on canon vs nikon (such as the canon rebel xti vs nikon d5000)?

My deal is that I also have a tamron 75-300 mm lens for the canon and a 430 ex speedlite, so i dont know if it would pay for me to keep my accessories and go with another canon or sell it all together and get a nikon?

I usually check ebay for the same item to compare selling prices. For your XT, prices look like around $200-$250, which will very on what else comes with it.

The XTi is not a significant upgrade from a XT. You should get at least XS, XSi, T1i or so, or eve a 20D, 30D would be decent for you to have.

I say:

T1i/T2i or 40D/50D. Otherwise it's not enough of an upgrade.

You get so little for a used 350D that it's better to keep it as a secondary camera. Some events are a lot easier to cover with two cameras, with different lenses on.

XT to XSi is a good sized jump and not a lot of money. The XTi should sell for $200-250 (assuming good condition, you have the box, etc. ) or more if you are lucky. The XSi used is about $400 or less. XSi gives you a little bit bigger viewfinder, live view, more megapixels and a better control/menu interface. Also, it gives you auto-ISO.

That being said, jumping to the T1i adds a much better LCD and movie mode if you want it.

T2i is a jump in high ISO performance, and a number of other improvements.

d5000 is different -- it's a different feel, flip LCD better high ISO than the XT/XTi/XSi (and maybe T1i) but not the T2i.

Tough call. I'd start with price point, but the upgrade's worth it, but I'd skip the XTi. At least the XSi has auto-iso which is handy.

Maybe do a canon loyalty and trade it in for a 50D, which if I remember correctly is in the $630 range.

I sold mine for $200 last year (to a friend, so I could have possibly gotten a touch more). If you want an upgrade, I'd say go for at least a 40D. IMO, a Rebel is a Rebel is a Rebel, and they're pretty much all designed to be for moms and hobbyists and not at all for professionals. Again, totally IMO, but I wouldn't even consider another from the Rebel line.

5D, 24-105L, 50 1.4, 430ex I love to use off camera, calibrated.

Is the OP a pro?

Also, the XT is pretty old. The XTi is better (focus system, for example, bigger LCD). The XSi is better than that (bigger LCD, live view). Then the T1x line is almost completely different (adds video, really high MP). A rebel is not a rebel. The 40D is basically the XTi with better/different AF and different ergos (also longer life shutter).

The XTI is quite a bit better than the XT, and from what I've seen is better than the XS. XT<XS<XTI<XSi<T1i.

An XSI upgrade + a 55-250mm lens would be a good upgrade from what you have right now.
