My 5Dc took a total of 5 days to and from NJ . I dropped it of via UPS Thursday night and got it back from Canon Tuesday morning. I live in Wisconsin close to Milwaukee. Going back to me was an overnight shipping from Canon. That was really fast...

Canon NJ was fantastic and fast with my 5D mirror check and fix. I had no touble with it but decided to send it in shortly after I bought it used. It came back in a week with a note that said something like:

We fixed the mirror, cleaned the sensor, updated the firmware (and one or two other things I cannot remember).

No charge - not even for shipping either way.

I did not ask them to do anything other than check the mirror issue.

I am told that, if you ask them to clean the sensor or do anthing other than the mirror, they will happily do it - but they will charge you for those extra services if you ask for them.

If you don't ask them to clean the sensor, for example, they clean it anyway - and don't charge you.

That was my expereince and of several others I have read on various discussion boards.

Hope they keep it up.

Send it in.

Here's my story.. Had my 5D for almost a year now. Never showed any signs of the mirror issue, but always figured I'd eventually send it in anyway.

So this past Saturday I'm working a wedding and 5 minutes into it, bam.. the mirror detaches and well that was it for that 5D for the day.

Don't wait until it happens to you at the most in opportune moment.

Exactly the same thing happened to me........luckily the MKII was on hand

LOL. I am actually married and my wife supports my obsession/hobby. She even hauls gear, holds lights, and waits patiently while I wait for the perfect shot! No, she doesn't have a sister

Sounds just like my girlfriend, and when I come to spend £1000 on some glass soon, I'll just treat her to some £300 sunglasses! She won't know the difference

Mine are coming back today. It seems mine took longer because they were asked to ship to Newport News and from there they were sent to NJ center. So, hopefully yours will be back soon as well.

Yeah, so I had progressed for the Xsi to a 5D classic and now the 5d mrk II. I had heard about the mirror recall and didn't think much about it and never bothered. Well, after having the classic for exactly 2 weeks, the mirror fell off, DURING A SHOOT. I had my Xsi, so finished up with it. I was worried about sending the 5D in, but the folks at Canon were very helpful and emailed me the form and the UPS barcode label and made it very convenient. They did say allow about 2 weeks turn around. Their explanation was that the fix itself doesn't take that long, they allow dry time for the mirror to firmly adhere before shipping it back to you.

And it was about 2 weeks to the day when I got it back. Works great, sensor clean and firmware updated. I would say GET THE MIRROR FIX DONE AS SOON AS YOU PICK UP A SECOND HAND 5D CLASSIC, if the fix has not been done before you bought it. I was just lucky that I did have that little Xsi laying around to finish up that shoot!

Send it in???? This is a no brainer, yes you send it in. Why wait for an accident to happen, especially if you are on a special assignment and your camera decides to quit. You know there is a problem with the 5D, so address the problem up front, get it fixed and have piece of mind. I did. It will not cost you one dime to get it fixed, and canon does a great job. When I bought my 5D new, I shipped it to canon right away, no questions asked. I did not wait for the problem to occur, or say maybe I have got a good copy.

Thanks for the input. It was never a question of sending it in or not. It was more a question of when. I had all intentions of sending the 5d in right when I got it, but the timing made it difficult due to wanting it for vacations. Regardless, if you read later posts, you will see that I did decide to send it in.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but wanted to give an update. I called Canon before sending the camera in to make sure that I could get the camera back before my vacation. They said that ththere should be enough time, but couldn't guarantee it. I sent the camera in on July 21st. It arrived in Irvine on July 23rd but didn't get into their system until July 29th.

I called on Friday and they said it was still being repaired. Called on Monday and they said it was in shipping and I would get a tracking number when it shipped. It needed to ship by Monday to get to my house by Wednesday. I leave on Thursday so this was cutting it pretty close. Well Tuesday rolled around and no shipping email, so I called Canon customer service and got put through to their call center. I wanted to pay for rush shipment OR change the address to my hotel so that I could get my camera. They said it was impossible to do either and that I would just have to wait until it came.

I then called the service center in Irvine directly. They said they could change the shipping address no problem and sent someone to go pull it out of shipping right away. It is getting shipped to my hotel and will be there on Friday.

Moral of the story. The service center in Irvine took a little longer than expected, but they made up for it by shipping it to my hotel. Always call the service center directly and never call Canon customer service, they suck.

There was a clip on utube where they would show how violent the 5D mirror movement is in slow motion .
Unbelievable
If you find it and watch it believe me you will not sleep another night until you send it in.

I have sent two 5Ds to the NJ center, and things worked out great. I would just wait until you came back from vacation. You don't want to risk not having your camera back in time.....although both times I got the camera back in about 5-7 days.

All 5Dc needs this recall service fix.

I had good experience with New Jersey service center. I got mine fixed for a total of 5 days (includes weekend) from / to Wisconsin / NJ
