I have just got my 7D in yesterday and I am going to do some very deep testing with the equipment I have on both cameras to see how, if at all, the 7D is or isn't worth the leap from the 40D. I am also looking for input on anyone out there with similar equipment and may have IQ comparison questions.

My personal test will include the obvious, all lenses I own on both camera, focusing, ISO, resolution comparison, downsizing IQ, sharpness with the lens correction ability of the 7D, 100% crops, over all IQ.

It will be a very controlled and documented test. If anyone has a test suggestion or an idea they would like to have seen threw on this comparison please list it below.

Thanks, I will post back in a day or two and I will check for posted test ideas.

This is the one I did, if you wanted to try the same time of resizing each image each way...

The 7D is better at high ISOs, and the AF is much better! Some 40Ds really start to band at 3200 and higher.

IQ is only part of the story. Go into a darkened roller rink and try shooting derby skaters at ISO 1600 and 3200 who are moving around a tight track at about 15-20mph. The 7D's AF will blow the 40's out of the water. I've owned both (still have a 7D and 50D now) and there is no comparison in that regard.

This user just saved you a bunch of testing time with the 40D.

you can't compare the 40D to the 7D... More realistic to compare it to the 50D at most. I had the 50D and loved it as it was all I ever needed...but the 7D quickly replaced my 50D because of the crazy capabilities it has in the AF department.

IMO pair it with a CANON lens and not a 3rd party and you will see what this baby can do. Yeah I am a Canon fanboy and proud of it. I had Sigma lens and flashes and nothing comes close to Canon products.
