Is hot shoe cover necessary to protect the metal from rust , dirt ?

Never used one and haven't ever had any issues with rust or dirt. I'd be quite certain that I'd lose one in short order should I start :p

If you use one on the bodies with a pop up flash, the pop up flash won't deploy or work until you remove it.

For the most part they are not needed.

But I used to have one when I was shooting film. And it bugs me to no end that there is not one in the shoe now. Every now and then, when surfing the internet, I will get on a spree to try to find another one to have in there.

lannes is right...If you have a built in flash, it will not pop up if something is in the shoe. If you never use the built in flash it is not a problem.

I use one on my 40D so that the hotshoe does not snag an item of clothing. The cover comes off if I want to use an external flash with or without OC.

I use one with a level, like the one posted by Mark1, on my 5D so that the camera is absolutely level so that have no convergence of vertical lines when I use a 24mm shift lens for architectural work.

I use one, but for purely aesthetic looks and not to prevent rust/brassing.

I had one on my Nikon for the whole three years I owned it. Meant to keep the cover when I sold the camera to stick on my 7D when I ordered and forgot when I sold it.

Oh well...

Both of my Nikon's came with an insert for the hot shoe.
I use em all the time. It's very rare that I ever use my speedlites on my camera, but use my PWII's a lot.
It keeps dust out and protects the rails. I just wish my, Canon's came with em too ;)
