Just looking for a little insight here. Currently I have a 50D, a 24-70L and a 50mm f/1.4 I hope to become a professional photographer in the future focussing mainly on families, children, portraits, possibly weddings, etc.
I have been dreaming about getting the 5DmII for some time now and now that I have the money for it I am questioning myself.
SO I guess I'll put it this way. If you had the equipment I had and $2400 would you uprade to the 5DmkII or put it towards glass. Specifically something like the 85L? Would an 85L on a 50D take as good as a picture as the 5dmkII with say the 24-70 on it?

Go with the 85L. 50D is a very capable camera. The 5D2 is a really nice camera but lens will do a lot more for your photography then the camera.

I agree, glass before a body upgrade.

Another possibility: FF cam and 70-200. With the 24-70 that's a pretty formidable set.

This exact same thread is posted in the lens section, and there everybody is recommending the 5D2 (except me, of course).

There is no logic upgrading from a 50D to a 5D2 if you are "considering" going pro - skill and experience first, gear second. As drive_75 said, the 50D is a great camera and will do a very good job at getting you going and earning you some money (easily).

Glass first! It's a better investment with far greater return.

The IQ is always going to be determined more by the glass than by the body.

Purchase the best glass that you can afford. You will have it long after you have replaced the body.

I haven't done a lot of research on the classic, can I ask why you suggest this?
A lot of people on the lens forum think my best route would be the 5dmkII + 85mm 1.8.

If you want to get 85L, then I would go the 5D2 route first.. then the lens
