How do i turn this on.
I'm shooting football, and i can't seem to press the button and activate the AF. So that i can just hold that down to override the shutter AF...

Anythoughts?

Unless you've turned it off, the AF-ON button by default does the same as half-press of the trigger button.

Unless you've swapped it with the * button in which case it will do AE lock.

Normally AF-On does focus and meter while the shutter does focus, meter and shoot on full press while * does AE lock. You can take the focusing off the shutter button using a custom function and you can swap the AF-ON and * buttons which many old 1D Mark II users did after upgrading since the Mark II doesn't have AF-ON, it has a W/B focus assist button there instead.

Check your custom functions or reset the camera to factory settings if you bought it used.

The Canon Digital Learning Centre has a good article on Back Button AF and explains the menu options for the custom function:

Try this;

Set Custom function IV-1 to "3"

Make sure that CFn IV-2 IS NOT SET TO "1"
Setting that to "1" will swap the AF ON button with the * button.
