Some cracking shots Gadget-Guy - the detail is strides ahead of the 1D3 in the stuff I've seen so far.

Anyway, I tried something different yesterday for my first day out with the 1D4 - still horsepower but on hooves :D

The AF now seems a lot more stable and less jittery. This pic was SOOC apart from a small crop on the right - no PP done as I gather they're supposed to be more 'editor-ready' if you have them published.

Adphoto the detail in the muscles is excellent.
The MKIV is the first camera I have had enough faith in to shoot jpeg's rather than RAW as the files are so usable straight from the camera.

Thanks for that - I'm hoping to get to Cadwell for the BSB so will try for some results there but I'm not expecting your quality. It seems like you're able to get trackside...

Thanks for the offer - I'll make a note to give you a shout.

I've only been to Cadwell once - up to now I've been to Croft a few times so it's good to find out about somewhere new. I've mainly used 300mm & 500mm but the 500mm can force you into very similar framing for shots (3/4 fronts mainly) so they all look the same after a while.

I like the timing and angle of the Michael Rutter shot - you've caught some tyre deformation under cornering / power with that one :)

These were taken with the 1D3: (Sorry, no 1D4 bike pics yet ;) )

300mm

Hey Andy!!

Love this shot ... I was actually thinking about going out to the local Polo Matches in a couple of weeks and this inspired me.

Thank You,

All I've been doing for 6 weeks solid is shooting dog agility trials. This is my life until mid October it seems...

Pouring rain, little light, not a problem.

Hi joeandpuppies,

Good luck with the polo - if there's good light you should get some great shots. I'd not done show-jumping before so played with the settings a bit. These were taken on shutter priority and auto ISO - I banged up the SS to approx 1/2500 or 1/3200 and let the camera get on with juggling the aperture and ISO. I tried speeding up the tracking response but found it would snap to fences as I followed the riders between them so left it on the middle position - maybe I should have slowed it down further. I had main focus point priority on so it kept with the rider but had point expansion on all around the picked point. It's nice having the ability to set different focus points for horizontal and vertical shots so you're not frantically chopping between them with different orientations. It's also nice being able to pick from the full 45 points rather than the cut down number on the 1D3. I even managed to select a couple of points at a time for some combinations.

A friend is suggesting we try an evening horse race at a local track - I might have found the body that gives me a chance! :D

I spoke to Canon Support about the same tracking issue. There is a custom setting that makes the focus point avoid anything that comes in front of the subject which might help. I use it when shooting animals in a zoo because people walk between my camera and subject too often.

Thank You,
joeandpuppies

You sure speeding up the servo is a good idea? I shoot on the slowest setting and never a problem, I can track a dog over many obstacles without losing them, you should easily nail a horse.
