Canon has a free program called Digital Picture professional, pretty good program IMO and will edit and convert RAW files.

The problem is you must have the disc in order to get that program. The OP doesn't have the disc.

Apparently there's a way to install it if you edit the registry but you'll have to do some Googling if you want to do that.

Not to worry.

Go here http://www.usa.canon.com …cameras/eos_digital_rebel (external link)

Select drivers & software

Select your OS

Then download the most recent version of DPP (Digital Photo Professional 3.8.1)

Then download Canon RAW, Zoom Browser, Picture Style Editor, and EOS Utility. (these are the programs that come on the Canon disc)

Actually, all that is available are updaters, and you need the version on the CD, or the CD itself to install. I ran into this problem with my used 50D. Got the camera with no software, thankfully the wonderful Used Department at B&H was able to send me a CD. Then I was able to download and install the latest versions...

I have the CD that came with my 400d but I haven't installed it on my Windows 7 computer yet - am I right in thinking I can download a 64-bit version update from Canon and just use my CD to authenticate?

Only one way to find out....LOL

I would be interested in knowing because my version was installed in the (x86) program file and I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't run faster as a 64-bit program. Even when I installed the most recent update and I selected 64-bit OS in the drop down, it still put it in the (x86) program file.

Please let me know if it works because I'll wipe mine clean and start over if it will speed it up.

I just got my XSi yesterday, went to shoot a concert, and for the first time shot in RAW. But I connected it to my computer, and it cannot read the files, even with CS2. If I cannot get them, that's over 200 pictures that are lost.

Anyone!?!

Use gimp (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ (external link)) and UFRaw (http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html (external link)). They are both free. These are if you want photoshop-like functionality. If you want something very simple to use, download Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/ (external link)), which is free as well.

OK I've done it.

What you need to do is to download the latest version of Canon's DPP software which is here:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010791.asp (external link)

(download the other stuff too if you like, eg Zoombrowser etc).

If you try to install the software it asks for the CD. I've looked but can't find mine so here are the relevant registry entries you need to make to fool the software into thinking you have it installed already.

Please note: these are the registry entries for the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and Vista, not the 32-bit version.

Create a notepad file and call it dpp.reg with the following contents:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\DPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\Zoom Browser EX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\Zoom Browser EX\Settings]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\Zoom Browser EX\Install]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\PhotoStitch
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOSCapture]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ODSK]

Or alternatively download one I prepared earlier here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41858/dpp.reg (external link)

Add this to your registry, then you can install the software. I've just done it and it works perfectly.

Hmmm I got my camera from B&H, so maybe if I give them a call, they can also send me a CD. I'll try that. But. I have a couple other tricks up my sleeve, some might not be of the most legal reasoning. But I see I'm not the only one :p

When I found my 1st DSLR in a thrift shop I got it because I had a CF card at home in my A95 pNs I could use to test it...what I later discovered was that the CD software that came with the A95 also allowed me to download and install DPP from the Canon website...so.....
Look out for a cheap used/broken powershot cam on ebay for one that comes with the CD...
