ok.. as much as i love to get my hands on a 1DMK3 or MK4.. guess that will just have to wait. i can still use my 30D for that.

but i've been shooting a lot of portraits these days and wifey loves to shoot landscape.. so, canon loyalty program was the best bang for the buck.

new 5DMK2 will arrive next week.. and now need a good walk around lens to match with this. love to shoot low light and wide open..

any suggestions?

isn't 24-70 a brick to carry around?

pretty heavy to carry around but it's the best walk around lens to match your 5Dmk2 :)

Get a good neck strap and you won't even notice.;)
The 24-70L is my primary lens for when I'm out and about (and I run with the 580EXII and a battery grip without issues). Also, wear it with one arm through the strap (cross shoulder) instead of straight around your neck or hanging off of your shoulder.

Yes, it is! I used a 5d Mark II and a friend's 35L on a small video project for a portfolio review and wow. 100%, absolutely perfect. It was like all the pretty things merry Christmas often brings.

The 24-105 "kit" lens is fantastic as an all-arounder. As is the 35L, if you like primes.

I'd go for either of those, depending on your needs / preferences. The 24-105 kit, saves you a bit of money in the end, and it's a damn fine lens if you don't need the 2.8 (which you most likely don't with the 5D2 and it's ISO capabilities - imho )

I only have the 24-70 and the 50/1.4. You get used to the 24-70 pretty quick, but after putting my 50 back on the 5d2 for awhile, the 24-70 is crazy big. again, a little time and boom, back to "normal" with it.

Congratulations on your 5D2, I would recommend the 24-70L also, yes it is heavy but a fantastic walk around lens

I have the 24-105L and the 35L. I sometimes think people overlook the 24-105L because it is a "kit" lens. If you don't need the f/2.8 it is a superb lens. It is a sharp lens. Excellent walk around lens. The 35L is magical. I love the focal length and the image quality is outstanding.
