I've never seen the milky way as clear as that. In fact it's becoming impossible to see even in the middle of the English Channel where there is no light pollution. Maybe due to other forms of atmospheric pollution? On a five day delivery trip from Dublin to the Solent I saw it for about 20 minutes in total.

Thanks for the comments! The hardest part is finding a location with skies dark enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye. The Miljy Way rises in the east and sets in the west like the sun and so I set up near a lake to try to get a reflection. Used my 16-35 at f/2.8 set for 30 seconds at 1600 ISO on a tripod with a cable release. Thats all there is to it. If you set your shutter for longer, you start to get star trails. I tried to set my ISO at 3200 and 15 seconds but didn't like the results as well---the pictures had more of a yellow cast which is not what my eyes saw. Here's an example:

Thank you for the info...will give it a try when I can find some dark sky....not too hard around here fortunately.
Will use my TS-E 17 as it's heaps sharper than the 17-40 f4L but obviously will need to watch the exposure time as I'm down a stop on your 16-35 f2.8.

Growing old disgracefully!

I've become fond of this shot lately. Early June in Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming.

Our first sunset on Kauai last week - didn't take the big guns so this was captured with the S90... turned out to be the best sunset of the week there.

Another photo from the most beutiful contry; Norway!

This is taken at Laupren, and it's the city Molde you could see in the background. The man is standing on 1434 meter.
