Oh really, not a fan of slow loud motors.

I am starting to like the idea of the Sigma, I also like the fact it's large as it gives you a sense of quality, plus filters etc will match that of my 24mm, too.
There are some decent images in the lens sample forum. Certainly worth a look.

The 45mm Tilt-Shift might be worth a rental to see if it's something you'll want in the future; it seems like a really fun (although expensive) lens.

Canon 50L - (too expensive for something which isn't at the top of the pile.
Canon 1.4 - Already owned so fancy something different and sharper wide open.
Ziess F2 - Too expensive.
Ziess 1.4 - From what I've read no better than the Canon 1.4, yet twice the price.

No, no. The Zeiss f/1.4 Planar is no sharper than the Canon 1.4 wide open, but the similarity ends there. Colors and contrast are great at every aperture and sharpness is excellent when stopped down a bit. It's optimized for infinity focus.

At f/1.4 you would be hard to find a sharp 50mm. It would be the Leica 50/1.4 Summilux-R but that's way more expensive than the 50L. Sigma, Canon (both L and non-L) as well as Zeiss are not particularly sharp wide open. The Zeiss leapfrogs the others stopped down and the Sigma has best bokeh.

The 50mm 2.5 is a very sharp lens with excellent edge to edge sharpness and flatness of field. For someone who does not really need 1.4 or 1.8, I would suggest considering this lens. Plus, the close focusing ability of this lens comes in handy.

I used to own the 50mm 1.4 Canon but it never truely inspired me, especially wide open.
So what are my options?

In what sense? Sharpness? Mine's sharp at 1.4, maybe you had a bad copy? I know plenty of people very happy with the Canon 1.4 :)

The reason I never fell in love with the Canon 1.4 was sharpness wide open. I love shooting this way, the lens although good really needed stopping down a couple of stops to get the best out of it.
