OS is not worth $1000.

But improved optics are worth.

Remember, you have to give it 3-4 weeks before the first-adopters get theirs back from Sigma after recalibration!

LOL.. But still, someone, by now, should have chimed in and said they needed to send it back.

I still think, that in order to justify their huge price increase from the prior to the new 70-200 f/2.8: $800* to $1700 (i.e., 112%), Sigma believes that this lens is something quite special (more than just adding OS)

Canon did not raise the price of the MK2 that much (even if you compare it to the price of the last generation non IS lens): $1300 to $2300 (i.e., 77%). And the MK2 has remarkably improved IQ.

*All prices in this post are from B&H today.

I'm depressed...$1700!? Really? Why would I get this over the Canon MkI? Once B&H listed it I believe it and I'm sicken. Sigma now knows they are awesome and has priced their stuff accordingly.

Well...

1. It is still cheaper than the Canon mk1

2. I suspect it's optics will be better as the 70-200 HSM II was close if not the same already

3. Since Canon released the MK II, they will sometime in the near future stop making the mk1... then you either buy the MkII or get the sigma =)

Or I buy a MkI used. I can't imagine the optics are THAT much better. Sigma has always been pretty awesome IMO but at a competetive price you may have to send a lens back. I've been lucky based on stories I read but now, gosh. Just 'cause the MkII went up Sigma seems to figure they can.

The MK I is still a great lens, it's nice that the MK II is better, but for what I shoot....The MKI always exceeded my expectations....I have the non-IS version now....another great lens. Who knows what the Siggie will bring to the table
