Just before his vacation, my fiancé bought a new (used) car, an MG convertible. We had planned on cruising in it and enjoying the sports car in the summer. Drive around and take some photo's and just enjoying ourselves.

Well, the weekend before the vacation started, on his way home from work, something in the car exploded and the car caught on fire. Huge flames of fire was engulfing the whole care. In the car my fiancé did not only have his Canon 7D (with a 24-105L on it), but also his laptop, a MacBook Air.

All went up in flames. The car. The camera & lens and the computer.

Luckily no person was harmed. That's the best thing in this whole story. The car was imported from the UK, so the insurance for it hadn't kicked in yet. So nothing will be replaced that went up in flames.

Here's how the camera looks like now.

I know it hurts, so if you're sensitive. Look away now.

Ready?

OK, here goes.

Ouch. I know!!

But the best thing is... not only did a computer tech manage to get the harddrive out of the computer safe, so he could copy all his images he'd taken since he got the 7D when it was new last winter.

The 7D did keep a secret inside its melted body.

The CF-card was completely unharmed! It didn't even smell that foul smell that burnt stuff has. Not a scratch on it. All images are recovered, and I even think it's possible to use the memory card again!

Although, opening the CF door was a bit tricky.... so I don't think it's possible to get the door back on again. :D

Moral of the story?

I dunno. But be careful out there, and don't set your camera on fire.... even if it's sturdy enough to keep your CF card unharmed.

You think Canon would accept this as a repair case during warranty? :D :D :D :D

I hope you can get insurance on the car somehow.

wow, that's amazing.

You should send this pics to both canon and sandisk honestly, one might step up and use them in ads and maybe help you buy a new camera/lens. Also, that's one body canon will put into the loyalty program no problem (if you have it over there)...

We didn't try to get the lens off. I think the lens release button is melted. We were more interested in trying to save the CF card to be honest. There was some images there that he really wanted/needed.

I was amazed too that the card was completely unharmed. It didn't have that foul smell or anything. I'm gonna use it in my IR converted 40D, just in case. But it did seem to behave normally when retrieving the images. But I dont think I dare to use it for weddings.

LOL... canon_fire is a good name for that. You want the camera? :D :D :D

Oh, I will send the images to Sandisk for sure. I'm debating if I'm going to ask them to replace the card, just in case. Even if it's fully working from what I can tell. But better safe than sorry.

Unfortunately we don't have a loyalty program here. But I do know a guy at Canon that I met in person last year, so I'm going to email him the images just for kicks. Who knows!!

Since there's no insurance (looooong story about the import car), I have nothing to lose.

Thanks for the great tip! :D

Where's the pictures of the car? Just because this is a photography forum doesn't mean you can tease with shots of a fried camera and not post anything of the computer or car. :)

I agree with Jacobsen1 100%! I would definitely give Sandisk's marketing department a telephone call. The burnt camera with the unblemished memory card would make an awesome advertising oppurtunity. Maybe they would want to buy the camera from you.
