I LOVE this lens as well. I have the Canon 85/1.8, but didn't like the focal length, so I barely used it. The 50L was perfect. This will probably be my favorite indoor lens for parties and family gatherings.

But his camera might not be.

Yeah, yeah...it was just a bit of gentle jostling. ;)

From all of the pictures i have seen it seems like the 50L has a warmer color tone than the 1.4. The color on the 50L looks more natural to me. Color on the 50/1.4 is very nice, but is a little on the cool side. I think the 50L takes magnificent pictures just based on what ive seen on the forum. I wonder why so many people discredit this lens.

Totally agree.

This happens to be one of my favorites. Made the jump from 1.4 version last year. Have never looked back.

Because it has a "design flaw," backfocuses near MFD, focus is inconsistent, the hood ring may fail, it doesn't make you dinner, can't change the weather, your shoes, socks or your mother-in-laws predisposition to nag you about everything you are "doing wrong" with raising your kids.

It will be my third dance with this lens, I've owned it twice before. It seems that I get frustrated with it and sell it, only to regret it some months later.

My first copy wasn't exceptionally sharp and exhibited some front focus issues. My second copy was sharp wide open, and honestly the only thing I could complain about was the focus shift. Probably stupid of me to sell it in the first place. Live and learn. (I got to try out a bunch of other great lenses in the mean-time though!)

My third copy... We'll just have to wait and see ;)

I will say this though, yes the focus shift can ruin shots (which it has for me) BUT, when you do work outside of the danger zone this can be really one heck of a lens. The bokeh is just excellent.

On a side-note, this is a awesome lens for DSLR video :D

Awesome! That's a great family capture, but that's awesome he's kicking past 100! Very cool, thanks for sharing a moment with your family :)

No problem. Grandma is still active at 94 years. It is pretty amazing.
