Just got a 7D and uploaded some raw files. The thumbnails won't display for these file. My raw files from my XTi display fine. Do I need to upgrade somthing?

My RAW thumbnails never showed up, with my 7D or my XT.

Seems like I had to install a program to get them for the XTi.

Where don't they show up? In Windows Explorer?

If so, Windows needs a coded to be able to understand the RAW files. They aren't identical between camera models. Canon's provided software will have the necessary files.

I installed ArcSoft's RAW Thumbnail Viewer awhile back. But it only covers up to the XSi (and .dng files). For my 50D and 7D RAWs, I shoot a small JPEG also for a reference thumbnail.

Are you running 64-bit Windows? If the answer is yes then you need to buy the Fast Picture Viewer codecs from here (external link).

If the answer is no then you need to download and install the latest codec from Canon (a google search will find it).

That's what I've always used on Vista x64

Thats what i've been doing. Just thought maybe there was another way, this way I didnt have to shoot RAW + JPEG if I can see my RAW files in Windows.

I'm running XP 32 bit. Googled and can't find a codec for 7D raw.

I have been using it since 2005 and it works well on XP with CR2s from the Xt, 40D and 5D2.

No idea. I don't know if it has been updated since 2005.

Thanks! Also shows 50D and 7D .CR2 thumbnails (Windows XP).

It also has a pretty good Exif reader and can extract the embedded jpg. Look for it in the right-click menu.
