I'm considering getting a Billingham 307, but have a slight concern over a review indicating that the lens pockets are too small for the bigger lenses, e.g. L lenses with 77mm thread, specially since I have two lenses with an 82mm thread.

I absolutely love my Hadley Pro that I have had for about 5 years and use more or less on a daily basis. It takes my 5DII with a lens attached (e.g. 16-35 L II) as well as two other L lenses, or one lens (even my 300mm f4 L IS) and a 12oz thermos mug for coffee. The front pockets even take my Lee filter kit, ND Grads and B+W CPL.

But I find that I need a bigger bag more and more often.

Do you have a 307? Would the four lens pockets take four lenses from my arsenal of bigger lenses? These are:

16-35 f2.8 L II
24 f3.5 L TS-E
24-105 f4 L IS
70-200 f4 L IS
100 f2.8 L IS Macro
200 f2.8 L II
300 f4 L IS

Hi there!

I have a 307, and eventually it will take those babies, nevertheless you have to get the optional inserts!

The standard inserts can accomodate 2 large lenses, but the other two, maybe just a flash or some cables and acessories.

Here is mine..

i have 307, it's a beautiful camera bag. it has 4 sockets, 2 of them fits my 16-35II and 24-105 well, where the other 2 are too small for even a 50 1.4 glass. and only 1 socket is big enough to fit my 70-200 2.8 IS. This is also my only concern regarding the bag. the sockets are not as customizable compared to lowepro's.

nevertheless, it's a classy bag that doesn't look like a camera bag. the build quality is also top notch, my lowepro bags looked like 'cheap-made-in-china-stuffs' when compared to billingham (lowepro bags are also great, i still love mine although i love 307 even better)

I actually bought the 307 and I'm over the moon.

With the extra inserts (an a pair of scissors), it takes a hell of a lot of gear: 5DII with L bracket and 24-105LIS, 16-35LII, 24tse, 15 fisheye / 1.4x tc, 70-200LIS, 100LIS, 430EXII, Lee filter holders, NDGrads, 105mm polariser and more accessories...

I am looking at a 307 as well but can't find anywhere to try out the bags with my kit due to work circumstances. Robert White is nearby but only open Mon to Friday which I can't make.
I have a 7D with grip which seems to take up half of this beautiful bag. I then need space for a 70-300 DO lens which is quite stocky and a 25-105. It would be nice to have space for another lens, currently EFS 10-22 (which is 77mm) and/or my EF50 1.4. (which may at some stage be complemented by the 100 F2.8. Should I be considering a 335 instead although I would prefer the 307 as it is more sleek and manageable?

Given that it takes my 5DII with lens as well as 6 other lenses (in two rows of three), it would easily take you gripped 7D with standard zoom attached and 4 other lenses.

The gripped 7D will take up less than half of the bag, and you'll sill have ample space for 4 L lenses organises in 2x2. But, as mentioned before, you'll have to buy additional inserts.

Although Billingham sells this bag with inserts that are 150mm wide, it comfortably takes a cm or two more. Buy two 8x15 or higher (15 being the hight), cut the small part of them (as it's useless), and fit two 8x8 cm squares beside each other to fit two thick L lenses (e.g. my 24tse and 24-105). Only reason to get higher ones is for longer lenses, e.g. 70-200 (needs 8x18 insert) or even 300 f4 (needs 8x21 insert).

Choose the hight of the inserts to match your lenses.

I have 6 lens compartments organised in 3x2 with two pairs of 15cm high inserts of 7x7 and 8x8, and a pair of 18cm high inserts of 8x8.

Bag has arrived at neighbours. Tried to order extra inserts but everyone including Billingham has run out. I rang Billingham and sent an email and they were very helpful here is the reply;

"Dear Mr YamYam

Thank you for your email and recent telephone call, I can confirm I spoke to you regarding the 07 bag which would be able to fit the camera and lenses.

You will be able to fit all the following lenses in the 8(diameter)-15
(height) or an 8-18 superflex, but these will have to be stacked on top of each other

Canon EF 24-105L Diameter 83.5 height 107
Canon EFS 10-22 Diameter 84 height 89.5
Canon EF DO 70-300 Diameter 82 height 100
Canon EF 100L 2.8 Diameter 79 height 119

We can swap the superflexes if you require a different size but the 307 comes with a 8-15, 9-18 and a superflex flap.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind regards"

I am not sure they are aware people are hacking their inserts to fit the lenses into the bag side by side. maybe I should let them know. I will wait to look at the bag and then order the extra inserts as I will have an 8-15 to try out. Waiting time circa 2 weeks I think.

That's why I said additional inserts and a pair of scissors!

Basically, take two 8x15 superflex inserts, cut the small parts off, giving you two squares of 8x8 and 15 high. Put beside each other in the bag (instead of one 8x15x15 supaflex insert with an 8x8 and about 8x4 spaces). The bag comfortably accommodates more than the manufaturer's spec of 15 wide.

I have got 6 supaflex inserts, one 7x15, three 8x15 and two 8x18. I have cut the short parts of each giving me six squares, one 7x7, three 8x8 and to high 8x8. Organised in three rows of two. leaves me with enough space at one end for my 5D with say 24-105 zoom.

Have you tried Premier Ink and Photographic? Their site says 8x15 and 8x18 are in stock.
