Just today, sold a VERY rare air rifle for $2500 to payback some of what I've spent on this:oops:

Man, you guys are killin' me with these shots. I've got a long way to go... but I'm loving this camera. No way I would have had the patience to learn this stuff on film. Kudo's to those of you who did it. Instant feed back is very gratifying. And the tools on the camera for checking what you've done are so handy!

I know this is all old hat to most of you but to me its a miracle! I took a bunch of shots of my daughter earlier today and several were badly lighted with severe over exposure of the overcast sky and her (very blond) backlit hair. Afterwards I was trying to figure out how to handle this (still working on that - some kind of flash I expect) and found the historgram and the very cool overexposure warning (flashing the over exposed part of the shot).

I suspect for most of you that's a very crude indicator, but for those of us just learning what to look for in a good image it's like having some one there to look over your shoulder and say "see that, you need to do something there" instead of finding out later in the day.

Here's two pics facing opposite directions. The first is exposed reasonably well, the second is all washed out. I know there are compositional problems with both (like the pole growing out of here head in the first!). That aside, thoughts on dealing with the harsh light?

^^^ NES_MATT: What metering mode are you using? I would recommend using spot metering when you have a strong backlit background. This helps you to adjust your exposure on your primary subject. Using spot metering, take the meter reading off your subject..then based off your reading, adjust your exposure compensation on your camera to compensate the strong light.. Are you shooting JPEG or RAW? Manual or auto? Sometimes, you will properly expose your subject but still have blown highlights. Post processing helps to fix some of these issues... Good luck and enjoy the camera!

Below are some pics with a new wide angle I purchased - recently taken from a short trip to Leavenworth.

No, no, no no, please Doc, don't let the FF guys get me, I beg ya, enough already with the 000's of $'s/£'s/Yen/Euros...

Now feeling the itch for a 70-200L 2.8.. NO...NO....!!!! I can buy a car for that..OMG, and I still haven't learnt to actually get a shot properly in focus. Why am I struggling with this digital stuff, everything was so easy with film. Kodak ISO 100, daytime, Ilford 400 at night, old Pentax or Minolta 35mm,send it off for developing and printing, job done. I've frames on my wall that are 30 years old, can't get close to 'em yet with digital..

maybe I need an FF camera...

Thanks for the encouragement, very humbling learning new stuff at my age.

(but, I CAN play the blues)

rod a great capture aswell, great emotion in the eyes

Thanks a lot! I figure it was rare, too, but it happened a bunch of times that day. Luckily I got a bunch of them!
