Does anyone have hands on experience with the new Hyperspace Album?
Vs the Colorspace??

I'm looking for a travel backup solution that can also backup to a secondary hdd as well.

The album looks like the Epson Pxxxx models but how well does it work?

I emailed Hyperdrive about this issue a while ago. The Album cannot back up to another drive. The Colorspace UDMA can with the addition of the sync kit.

Well that's disappointing then :(

Looks like I'll be looking more into the hyperdrive colorspace...

How's the screen on it? Good enough for raw image playback for quick viewings?

John,

I'm sorry, I don't understand. What type of drive can it not back up to? I assume it can upload to your C: or D: internal drive. Do you mean it cannot copy to another drive in the field without a laptop in between?

For a quick look, the Colorspace screen is fine. I'm upgrading and getting the Album as I don't have a laptop in the field and I want to see the images better.

The Album, according to Hyperdrive, cannot connect to another drive and backup/sync using USB OTG (i.e. as a USB master).

The Colorspace can connect up to another usb drive (FAT32 formatted) and using USB OTG (on the go), act as a USB master and transfer data directly to the extra drive WITHOUT needing a computer. You an move, copy, or sync data to an external drive.

That means you could go out with the Colorspace and an extra usb drive, shoot your images and upload them to the colorspace. You could then make a duplicate copy to an external USB drive or, alternatively, you could move data off of your Colorspace as it filled up, to another USB drive. You could leave your laptop at home but still be able to view your images and to back them up to multiple copies and hard drives.

This, to me, is a big deal. For some of the travel I do, I'd like to leave my laptop at home but still be able to back up my images to multiple devices.

Why not just back up from the camera directly to both backup Hyperdrives one after the other, instead of from one Hyperdrive to another? Don't delete and reuse the CF until you do so.

I like the idea of the Album for its superior, larger screen.

That's the point, you don't have to use TWO hyperdrives. You can use ONE Hyperdrive and any available USB hard drive. I can buy a 500MB drive for cheap. A second colorspace hyperdrive costs $200-300 or more depending on drive size.

That's your choice - bigger screen or more backup flexibility. For me, the backup flexibility is more important. I make multiple copies when I travel so that if one is damaged, I have backups. Can't do that easily any other way.

the only issue I see with the OTG sync kit is that it requires A/C power to the usb convertor for it to power external USB hdd enclosures.

Exactly. It's a little more futzing around but for light travel, I'd rather carry a USB drive and a small power adapter than a laptop and no power adapter.

I actually have both. I bought the Colorspace UDMA and had it for 6 months and then bought the Album as a second backup for a laptop-less trip I was taking.

The Album is a bit bigger, has a much nice screen, and seems a bit more user friendly. It also has a rubber cover that covers the SD and CF slots, although it does fall off from time to time.
One of the main drawbacks for the Album is that is needs AC power to transfer data Via USB. With the Colorspace UDMA it can just mount without external power. I find this to be a huge drawback. You also seemed to get a lot more options with the colorspace. It feels like the Album was a dumbed down version with a bigger screen.
I still like have both. Since I essentially mirror them when I do backups, I use the Colorspace to download to my macbook and I use the Album to browse in the field.
I bought both of them as cases only and dropped 500gb hard drives in em. Way cheaper.

If I did it again I would save 50$ and just buy another Colorspace.
